The Originals Season 2 Episode 20 Review: “City Beneath the Sea”

The Originals

A terrifying new alliance is formed this week on The Originals.  Up until now, we were led to believe that Dahlia is the big bad villain to fear, but as usual, it seems Klaus remains the king in that aspect.

Elijah and Rebekah, Klaus’ most trusted siblings, just daggered him right when his daughter needs all the protection she can get from her extended family.  Of course, that was all under the pretense that Dahlia has nothing but bad intentions for her.  We saw a new side of Dahlia, one that allowed even Klaus to possibly sympathize with this aunt he thought he was his enemy.  As it so happens, Dahlia and Klaus have a lot in common.  Both have been betrayed by their closest family members time and time again.  With their new agreement, I truly am scared for anyone and everyone who gets in their way.  Hayley is their target now, as Dahlia wants her out of the picture so that she can give Hope a better life than Freya had with at least one parent still around.  I doubt any of this will go according to plan, but it will be so much fun to watch!

While Klaus and Dahlia were busy scheming, Elijah and Rebekah were rounding up the rest of their troops for any bit of help they could get.  Davina, Cami, and ultimately Vincent worked together to come up with a golem to distract Dahlia from finding Hope.  Vincent was the one who noted that such a powerful witch wouldn’t be so stupid to fall for such a trick if the object linked to Hope wasn’t an actual human.  Never completely trusting Freya anyway, Elijah surprises her with an injection of Hope’s blood so that Dahlia will be hunting her.

Obviously, this will only be buying Hayley and Hope more time to run, because no one is stronger than Dahlia.  It seemed a little too dramatic for Hayley to leave Elijah the “goodbye” voicemail only because Jackson gave her an ultimatum to choose her family.  True, she never knew her real family growing up.  And also true that the Mikaelsons have been nothing but dangerous for as long as she’s been associated with them.  I love Hayley, but she should realize this is the stupidest decision she could make to renounce the Mikaelsons as Hope’s family, too.  They’re complicated and this situation is extremely messy, but each and every one of them would die to protect Hope.  I just don’t want to see Hayley die for no reason.

As we are winding down to the end of the season, it’s normal to expect some major shocks.  It seems the stage is being set for Davina and/or Vincent to rise to power as the new Josephine LaRue, a leader of all the area covens.  That would certainly be exciting for Davina, especially if she succeeds in resurrecting Kol in the process.  Cami and Marcel have been less important as of late, which I hope isn’t a sign that their time is running out.  If anything, Marcel has been a really good friend to everyone, including Josh following Aiden’s death.  Only time will tell what the writers have in store for the final few episodes!  I can’t wait to see how much more crazy it can possibly get!

Notable quotables:

-”I never thought much about the immortality part of being a vampire.  Suddenly, forever feels like a really long time.” -Josh at Aiden’s proper funeral.

-”The bond of family is not a bond forged by choice.  In fact, some would see family as a terrible burden.” -Dahlia’s opening voice-over.
