The Flash Season 1 Episode 7 Review: ”Power Outage”

The Flash 1.07

As we are six days away from an epic superhero TV crossover on The CW, last night’s The Flash continues the adventures of the fastest man alive where Barry Allen has to face the meta-human Blackout (guest star Michael Reventar).

I’m familiar with Blackout a little bit and the way they portrayed him in this episode was surprising as I thought they would take him on a more villainous route. I felt really sorry for him because this was a guy who just trying to have a great time with his friends that night before the particle accelerator incident. Right now, there are three different categories of people that got affected by the incident. There are the heroes (Barry), the villains and the victims and Blackout was one of them.

We also got the return of Arrow’s Clock King (played by the masterful Robert Knepper) as he took the entire CCPD station as hostages. I know that Clock King was never a member of the Rogues, but because of my Prison Break obsession, I want Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell) to somehow recruit him even if it’s just temporarily. Heck, let them also get Count Vertigo (Peter Stormare) over at Arrow and have one big Prison Break reunion. Regardless, I like that Iris got to take him down and luckily by not killing him because Clock King is a very fun character.

This episode was also very much about what is going on inside of Harrison’s mind because dang, that mystery just keeps going so many different directions. I like that Barry actually caught him on his act, sort of, for a brief part of the episode. Cavanagh is continuing to blow my mind away each week with his performances because at this point, we still have no idea if Harrison is good or bad. I did love the massive amount of Easter Eggs he threw out by naming several people who had died during the particle accelerator incident, all of them being DC characters. Who wants to bet that at least half of them will be revealed to still be alive in the second half of this season?

We get introduced to this A.I. known as “Gideon” (voiced by the amazing Morena Baccarin who will be on Gotham as Dr. Leslie Thompkins) that works for Harrison. I have my own theory on who she might actually be and it is something that was introduced last week. Remember when Harrison spoke of Tess Morgan, his wife that died in a car accident? I’m almost willing to bet that he transferred her conscious into this A.I. And for those who are ready to hit “are you insane” in the comments: it has happened before, plenty of times in Sci-Fi shows and movies.

I wouldn’t forgive myself if I didn’t bring this up and that is the hilarious scene that was Eddie on painkillers and morphine in the hospital after Clock King shot him. I know pain killers and morphine isn’t something to joke about, but heck it made Eddie so brilliantly hilarious. I will never look at Eddie the same way after hearing him scream “Flowers! That’s So Nice” and “I love ice cream” before  laughing adorably. But on a serious note, let’s study this scene for a second because Barry may have accidentally slipped up again.

When Joe tries to test and see if Barry has his powers back, Eddie asks if they saw what he just saw which was Barry super-catching the flowers. I would like to go back and use the Arrow pilot as an example: there is the scene when Oliver and Tommy gets kidnapped and later on, Oliver starts fighting the kidnappers without knowing that Tommy (who he thought was unconscious) did see part of the fight. 10-14 episodes later, when Oliver reveals his secret to Tommy, he learns that Tommy was somewhat aware of what Oliver was capable of. I bet that in a few episodes from now, Eddie will reveal that he wasn’t completely in a dope mode that day in the hospital and it’s going to cause some serious tension.

Overall, “Power Outage” was another solid episode, although I was surprised about two things, 1) they killed of Girder (Greg Finley) which was a bummer, but this is a comic book show so you never know what could happen and 2) that there wasn’t anything that set up the crossover in any way. But other than those two things, I was really happy with this episode.

Don’t miss the epic 2-night crossover event between The Flash and Arrow with Part 1 “Flash Vs Arrow” on December 2 and Part 2 “The Brave and the Bold” on December 3, 8/7c on The CW!
