It is a known fact that Breaking Bad is a critics’ darling and a fan favorite. But what about Low Winter Sun the gritty cop drama that follows Walter White and company? Already three episodes in, Low Winter Sun is getting mixed reviews and is losing over half of Breaking Bad‘s audience. The concept is fresh. Two cops named Frank Agnew and Joe Geddes have murdered a fellow man in blue and are trying to cover it up. The real kicker is these two cops are now on the case to find the killer.
The dead cop is Brendan McCaan. He is far from being voted Detroit Police Office of the year. He is a killer and drug addict. This is the reasons why Frank and Joe wanted him dead. Frank believes that Brandon murdered his girlfriend, Katia, and Joe was in fear of Brendan taking him down for the slaying and dismemberment of a drug lord.
In this episode, “No Rounds,” Joe has admitted to Frank that he witnessed Brendan kill the man that was found in Brendan’s car when it was recovered from the river. He also acknowledged to Frank that Katia is not dead. Instead she has been exiled to Canada and asked to never return to Detroit. Joe was ordered by Brendan to murder her, but he could not bring himself to do it. This is probably the last and only time we will see the softer side of Detective Geddes.
A witness has come forward claiming to have seen two men dispose of Brendan’s body. Frank and Joe quickly go to the interrogation room to hear what the man has to say. Everything the man remembers from 4 days prior is accurate, including the description of the two males that dumped the body. In order to save themselves, Frank and Joe bring up the man’s failure to pay child support and how he could get in trouble for not compensating his two ex-wives. They also make him repeatedly tell the story of the events from that night in order to confuse him. A sketch artist is brought in and the images look nothing like the dirty cops.
The hum-drum episode ends with Frank letting out his aggression in a boxing ring. After getting beat up pretty badly, he travels to Windsor to find Katia. This appears to be a storyline that will continue throughout the first season.
As someone from Michigan, it is invigorating to see a show that is set and filmed in the Motor City. I catch myself looking in the background to see if I recognize a building or point of interest instead of staying 100% focused on the storyline. If the intensity does not get brought up a notch, my time writing reviews for this show could be short-lived. Let’s hope this show continues, if only to generate income to the city of Detroit.
