Zoe is getting ready to say goodbye to Wade, who is heading to Daphne to play a reunion gig with his old band Mattress Police. The two are content with not having to be involved in every aspect of one another’s lives, though Zoe has to spring into action when the Alabama Department of Health contacts her regarding a string of flu outbreaks. The disease has hit every town surrounding BlueBell and is showing no signs of slowing down, so she recruits Rose to help her with inventory and sign-making before holding a town hall meeting, co-led by Lavon, meant to respond to fears regarding the quarantine she handed down.
Lavon describes the quarantine as a giant shark net mant to protect BlueBell from the hungry Great White that is the flu, but everyone is upset – exercise classes will be missed, concerts will go unattended, and for the next 48 hours, no one is to enter (or leave) BlueBell. Zoe makes an exception for those who have already gotten their flu shot, thinking that it would help Wade be able to come home and stay away from Lily Anne Lonegar, his former bandmate who is letting him stay on the couch. Unfortunately, Wade didn’t get a shot and therefore can’t legally come back to town; he also leaves Lily Anne’s place once she makes a pass at him, even though he told her he was taken.
That turned out to be a move that nearly broke BlueBell, as Wade snuck back into town and, clad in a red hoodie, inadvertently spread the flu. He sneezed on Cody, who sneezed on the Red Vines at Lavon’s tourism commercial shoot, which spread the flu to anyone who touched the candy. Before Dr. Hart knew it, there are medical tents set up and nearly the entire town is under the weather. Once she finds out who might have caused this whole thing, Zoe goes to Wade’s where she finds him holed up on the couch, obviously under the weather (and under a few blankets, as well). He rejects her attempt to take care of him, justifying it by informing her that he had been taking care of himself since he was 10 years old; that doesn’t stop Zoe, though, who goes back over later and makes him let her take care of him.
All the times she called didn’t come from a place of jealousy – they came from her missing him and wanting to be at the gig with him. Wade eventually relents and lets Zoe take care of him, only to have to return the favor the next day when she faints in the medical tent and has to spend the day in bed.
The First Time
Lemon and Walt have been going out for a couple of months and after talking to AnnaBeth about him inviting himself over to dinner, Lemon gets the idea that it’s time the two had sex. Finding the right guy is difficult enough, particularly after being out of the dating world for nearly two decades, and she doesn’t want to drive him away by not being physical. However, she has no idea how to seduce a man anymore, choosing a classical music compilation, the fine china, and conservative clothing before AnnaBeth advises her to be complimentary/flirty and to make a move once the lasagna’s in the oven. They’d have 45-50 minutes to kill and they wouldn’t be bloated from the food, after all.
Before the night can begin, Lemon gets sick and even though she tries to hide it, Walt feels of her forehead and ends up taking care of her for the rest of the night. Lemon ends up on the couch in some beautiful lingerie with a man she likes – she’s just resting instead of exerting herself. Walt isn’t going anywhere, though, and he assuages any fear that she had of him only being interested in one thing.
Kiss Me Twice
Lavon is bound and determined to keep BlueBell in the forefront of strawberry picking tourism, despite a challenge from Fillmore and a suggestive commercial to boot. George volunteers to work on a commercial to compete with Fillmore’s and joins forces with Tom on an elaborate idea, complete with animation, Taylor Swift, a hot air balloon…and a $1.2 million price tag. Though they can’t build the “strawberry paradise” that they dreamed of, George and Tom get nearly $400, a stool, and whoever they can convince to be in the commercial. When it comes time to cast a leading lady to play the stranded tourist led by Lavon to the BlueBell strawberries, George debates on a few names before Lavon overrides him and goes for AnnaBeth to join the commercial. She accepts and while the two have chemistry on camera, she can’t get over Lemon having been in love with him before; it’d be a violation of girl code and she decides to drop out of the commercial, citing the flu.
Crickett replaces her and Lavon isn’t feeling it. He wants to bring AnnaBeth soup and nurse her back to health, causing George to call him out over conflict of interest and the Mayor’s feelings for her; Lavon does bring the soup to AnnaBeth, as well as a care package complete with a gardening magazine that he reads to her from. His mother did the same thing when he was younger, only with a Sports Illustrated, and he wants to provide the same level of comfort for AnnaBeth that he got from his mother. Only AnnaBeth isn’t ready to let him in like that, making him leave once they share an impromptu kiss.
Later, she goes to his home to return the soup pot and tell him that the kiss was a mistake – however, the two kiss once again.
Additional thoughts and observations:
-“I don’t even have the right plates for sex.”
-“How does one go about building a sex dungeon?”
-“Son of a big fat sweaty hog butt!”
-I don’t know how I feel about Lavon/AnnaBeth. (LavonnaBeth?) It’s an interesting dynamic and they do have chemistry, but it’d be nice if BlueBell didn’t turn into a completely incestual den of dating just yet. However, as someone from a small town, it’s not far from being accurate.
-Rose never did get to see The Black Keys. Poor girl.
-Next week on Hart of Dixie: George loses Dolly Parton, Wade wants more alone time with Zoe, Lemon and Magnolia continue to plot to drive Shelby away from Brick, and Lavon wants a shot at a new relationship.
