Eminem Should Have Kept Acting After ‘8 Mile’ – And It’s Not Even a Debate

Directed by Curtis Hanson, who won the Academy Award for Best Director for L.A. Confidential, 8 Mile is a semi-autobiographical drama that follows the story of Jimmy “B-Rabbit” Smith Jr., a young rapper from Detroit struggling to make a name for himself in the competitive hip-hop world. The film’s plot follows Jimmy’s journey as he navigates the challenges of his personal life, including his tumultuous relationship with his girlfriend, Alex, and his relationships with his friends and family. Along the way, Jimmy must confront his own insecurities and doubts as he prepares to face off against his rival, Papa Doc, in a high-stakes rap battle.

With its gritty realism and powerful performances, 8 Mile received widespread critical acclaim and earned Eminem, who starred in the film and wrote its original soundtrack, an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Despite garnering many accolades for his leading role, 8 Mile serves as Eminem’s only fictional acting role. So, let’s explore that and delve into why he should have kept acting.

Eminem’s Raw Performance in 8 Mile Is Deeply Rooted to His Past

Eminem in 8 Mile (2002)

Although he takes on a different name in the movie, 8 Mile is heavily inspired by Eminem’s real life. Focusing on his tumultuous early days in Detroit, Jimmy struggles to make ends meet while pursuing a career as a rap artist. He must also contend with an unhinged mother (played by Kim Basinger) who fails to properly care for her daughter (Jimmy’s sister). While Eminem didn’t write the script for 8 Mile, he worked alongside screenwriter Scott Silver, being openly candid about his struggles, making the script raw and authentic.

In Hollywood, many musicians have ventured into acting and found tremendous success. Rappers like Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Ice T, and 50 Cent have all featured in blockbuster movies, defining themselves as multi-faceted talents. However, many of them have also faced harsh criticisms over the years as well, with a level of snobbery often citing them as improper actors. Whereas Eminem has only ever received praise for his role as Jimmy.

Given that the movie is based on Eminem’s real life, it’s easy to see how he connected so well with his character. To that, some may argue that this doesn’t class him as a great actor, seeing as he was drawing off his real-life struggles. However, there are many scenes in the movie that were purely fictional, and he still excelled. 8 Mile shows Jimmy in many different states, from depressed, angry, in love, in despair, and ultimately riding a wave of triumph while remaining subtly humble. To bring forth such a level of emotions is no easy task, and for that reason, Eminem truly showcased himself as an actor who could have gone on to further success in the field if he had chosen to do so.

Why Did Eminem Never Act Again?

8 Mile (2002)

While working on 8 Mile, Eminem was still working hard to maintain his career as a rapper. At the time, he was one of the best-selling artists of his generation. As mentioned, alongside starring in the film, Eminem also worked on the soundtrack, simultaneously writing “Lose Yourself” to be released in conjunction with the film. This juggling of roles led Eminem to experience a sense of burnout.

For his role as Jimmy, Eminem lost 24 pounds in bodyweight. His shooting days were up to 16 hours a day, and during his breaks from set, he was writing music in his trailer. It was during this time that his problems with addiction began. When speaking with Rolling Stone in 2011, he said: “We were doing 16 hours on the set, and you had a certain window where you had to sleep. One day somebody gave me an Ambien, and it knocked me the f**k out. I was like, ‘I need this all the time.'” Since then, Eminem has battled his addictions and continued to focus on music. However, in terms of his acting career, he has never played a fictional character again, yet, he has appeared as himself in small roles on occasion.

The Rapper’s Cameos as Himself Prove His Natural Acting Ability

These days, Eminem’s acting is limited to his music videos and the rare cameo appearance in TV shows and films. However, these roles come sparsley. He has starred as himself in a 2010 episode of Entourage, Seth Rogen‘s The Interview and the criminally-underrated comedy movie, Funny People. The latter of which was a scene-stealing performance opposite Adam Sandler. Playing himself in the short but memorable scene, Eminem discusses his hatred for fame before hilariously picking a fight with Ray Romano when he gets upset with his staring. This short scene showcased Eminem’s ability to deliver comedy in a shocking way as his anger seeps through, displaying a level of volatility.

8 Mile May Still Live On Yet

Now over two decades after 8 Mile was released, Eminem is partnering with his friend and fellow rapper 50 Cent for a TV series of the same name. The show will be set in 1995 and will provide further backstory to the character of Jimmy. The series will once again focus on Eminem’s real life. When featuring on the BigBoy TV podcast, 50 Cent said: “I’m gonna bring his 8 Mile to television. We’re in motion,” he said. “It’s gonna be big. I ain’t got no duds. I’m battin’ a hundred, I’m battin’ a hundred.” As of yet, it is unknown who will be playing Jimmy. However, Eminem is listed as an actor in the project IMDB. Given his age, he will unlikely be taking on the lead role, but could be coming out of acting retirement for a supporting role. He will also be acting as a producer on the show. Until then, here’s our pick of the 6 best biopics about musicians.
