After Diablo 4 made its debut last year, opinions are all over the place and it makes fans wonder in what way Diablo 5 will raise the bar. The Diablo series has been around for decades and has built a dedicated fanbase over the years. The series is known for its dark fantasy themes, hack and slash gameplay, and deep character customization. The first game, simply titled Diablo, was released in 1996. It was followed by Diablo 2 in 2000, which expanded on the gameplay mechanics and introduced multiplayer features.
Diablo 3 had a rocky debut in 2012, but since then, Blizzard has been diligently learning from past mistakes in order to deliver other new titles that live up to expectations. The day after Diablo 4‘s launch, it also claimed the title of Blizzard’s fastest-selling game of all time. With that, there’s no doubt that the game is thriving. The narrative swirls around the land of Sanctuary, which is thrown into chaos by the return of Lilith, the Queen of Succubi. Lilith’s tangled ties to humanity, the Heavens, and her archangel partner reveal difficult truths and moral gray areas. Exploration is richly rewarding, with diverse quests and dynamic events scattered across the world. Looks-wise, Diablo 4 impresses with its detailed environments and grim designs. Combat also feels more spirited than ever.
How the Release of Diablo 5 Could Compensate for Diablo 4’s Flaws
Considering everything, it’s hard to figure out where it could go off track. Even if a game is well-received, any aspects that don’t quite fit or seem off will still be scrutinized and debated by players and critics alike. Though the overarching narrative of Diablo 4 receives praise, there are instances of filler content, such as the pilgrimage quest, that disrupt the flow of the story. The slow progression towards inviting endgame content in Diablo 4 also taunts players with the impression that they can never quite reach the best experiences.
Diablo 5 should implement a progression system that strikes a better balance, so players can experience satisfying gameplay sooner in the endgame. This could explore the option of refining experience curves, loot acquisition rates, or quest formats to retain player interest at all stages of the game. The character customization in Diablo 4 also feels restrictive when creating diverse builds. Therefore, Diablo 5 should capitalize on this opportunity to expand on the skill tree system. The respec system in Diablo 4 isn’t any better.
Respec would allow you to reallocate your character’s skill points or abilities to better suit this new playstyle without having to start the game over with a new character. Respec systems vary from game to game, and some games may allow you to change your character’s build as often as you like, but this isn’t the case with Diablo 4. There are restrictions or penalties, such as requiring in-game gold currency, which haven’t clicked with the players. Diablo 5 should implement more flexible respeccing mechanics to avoid players feeling locked into their initial character build choices.
Blizzard Will Give Us the Diablo 5, Only When They Refocus Their Priorities
Since Diablo 4 was only released in 2023, there is a remote chance that we may see Diablo 5 in this year’s lineup or sometime soon thereafter. Blizzard is currently directing its initiatives towards furnishing a lot of post-launch content for Diablo 4 to sort out past shortfalls observed in Diablo 3. The General Manager of Diablo, Rod Fergusson confirmed that they are diligently working on heaps of new expansions and seasonal content for Diablo 4.
The Vessel of Hatred expansion for Diablo 4 was first revealed at the BlizzCon 2023 Opening Ceremony. They offered a glimpse of a 46-second trailer that is set to drop in late 2024. All things considered, Blizzard is expected to focus on fully realizing the vision for Diablo 4 and its expansions before moving on to Diablo 5. Though the approach could shift, Microsoft has historically maintained a hands-off approach to studio management. As such, Blizzard’s roadmap for Diablo 5 remains on track.
Chances Are, Diablo 5 Won’t Be as Delayed as Diablo 4
Diablo titles have always been engrossing because of their immersive gameplay, rich lore, and satisfying progression systems. But one thing is for sure: they consistently take over a decade or so to release. Even the usual crowd has also become used to Blizzard’s tendency to take their time between major releases. The release pattern shows a consistent trend of prolonged intervals, with gaps of around 11 to 12 years between Diablo 2, 3, and 4.
That being said, fans are understandably concerned about having to endure another decade-long wait for Diablo 5. IGN’s executive editor, Ryan McCaffrey, took to his X account to laud Blizzard for their “phenomenal” work with Diablo 4. He then boldly expressed that the game is his prime pick for the top contender for “Game of the Year thus far” as of August 2023. McCraffrey’s post reads, “As a Diablo fan, I’m so grateful that the long wait between D3 and D4 paid off with such a tremendously fun, deep, and replayable game.”
Blizzard President Mike Ybarra backed the post and pledged that fans “won’t have to wait so long between titles” and teased a wealth of content for Diablo 4 and beyond. The hardcore Diablo community can now breathe a sigh of relief knowing that shorter development cycles can be anticipated for future Diablo titles.
