There are people that claim that some movies never get remembered at all unless they happen to have killer soundtracks that completely outdid the movie itself. The truth of this is more than evident with many films that were supposed to be Hollywood gold when they came out but were more or less a silent, congratulatory effort or little more than a misstep by the director and/or studio. The only claim to fame these films really have is that the music they featured was memorable in some way and might allow viewers to actually recall a scene or two from the film that their favorite songs were connected to.
At the very least, the films listed below were remembered when their songs came on, and that’s something.
5. Batman Forever
Kiss From A Rose and Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me were the two hottest tracks on this album and were played almost nonstop upon the release of the film. It’s not too surprising that Seal and U2 were able to outlast the fame of Batman Forever. They were well known artists before the film was ever released and their reputation wasn’t tarnished in the least when the film flopped so badly. The hype leading up to this movie was enormous, but it was a check that it couldn’t cash.
4. Tron: Legacy
Largely instrumental in nature, this album still gave a much deeper feeling to a movie that some feel was very up to date and very complimentary of the original. Others however claim that it was a brief moment in history compared to the original Tron, something that had the potential to be great but didn’t live up to its progenitor. Let’s face it though, a lot of sequels don’t have that extra little something that’s needed to raise the bar a little higher, or to even reach the bar set by the previous movie. Tron: Legacy wasn’t horrible, but apart from its action sequences little is really remembered.
3. Above the Rim
At the time this movie came and for years after you could hear Nate Dogg and Warren G bumping in nearly every other car that went by on the block. Whether it was the heavily edited version or the CD, people fell in love with this track and the movie. The film wasn’t half bad, but there were a few issues that could have used some work, like the stiff acting on the part of some of the actors and the few choppy scenes that were to be found here and there. It wasn’t a bad film, but it could have used a little more development now and again. The song though was an instant hit.
2. Reality Bites
Believe it or not this actually became a very popular song at weddings. It’s not exactly a song you would associate with wanting to be with someone for the rest of your life considering its somewhat confusing messages. But Lisa Loeb was hot during this time, and not just for her bookish nerdy-girl looks, but because her voice was down to earth and so very real in a time when reality was all people seemed to care about.
1. Bulworth
You might not remember this movie with Warren Beatty at all. It wasn’t bound to hit the charts as a fan favorite and it wasn’t though to be that great. But its soundtrack was off the chart. With material from Eve, RZA, Method Man, Dr. Dre, and a few others, this soundtrack was one of the hottest to hit the shelves and easily outlived the popularity of the film.
It seems odd for a soundtrack to be more popular than the movie it’s attached to, but it does happen. Music is often more endearing to more people than film, as it requires slightly less attention and can invoke a much greater emotional range.
