A movie can be good, it can be great, and it can even be epic all on its own. But with the right soundtrack it can be legendary in a way that few pieces ever attain on their lonesome. With a killer soundtrack it’s possible to elevate a movie to the level that puts it in a realm all its own, where nothing else can touch it. There is something about pairing the right kind of music with a film that allows it to become something different, something that wasn’t originally intended but is so much better that you can’t help but stand with your jaw agape and your eyes slightly widened as you wonder just who in the world was in charge of the musical score. Sometimes you might even want to give them a hug for the awesome job they did.
Here are some of the more memorable soundtracks from the 1990’s that people tended to like.
5. Goodfellas
You might have thought to hear more Sinatra and Dean Martin but in reality you heard a good mix of rock and lighter songs in this film. It was a perfect blend between the gangster lifestyle and the world in which they were living. Nothing was completely one way or another, it was all a wonderful mix of a bunch of different sounds that made this movie so great.
4. Titanic
Even if you’re not into the mushy story line that this movie was built around you still have to admit that there was a definite sense of power, majesty, and feeling to this soundtrack that was, honestly, dominated by one song. If you could possibly tell me just one more song off of the soundtrack I would be legitimately impressed. It was very hard to remember anything but Celine Dion when it came to the music.
3. The Lion King
From the opening song to the last, which are the same, the Circle of Life is the main theme of this movie and the soundtrack largely because, well, it’s the one thing we all have in common and it’s important that we know our place in it. There are plenty of other songs within the soundtrack but none that are quite so powerful as this one, and so meaningful.
2. Dangerous Minds
Name another song off of this album. If you’re a real fan and movie buff it should be possible. Otherwise, Coolio did about the same thing for this soundtrack as so many artists did for others. It might not have been his intent to dominate the musical aspect of this film but that’s just what he did, and more to the point people let him do it without much of a fight because the song was so good.
1. The Crow
The soundtrack for this film had about as much of a cult following as the movie did. The song by the Nine Inch Nails is perhaps one of the best known tracks off of this album and the one that many remember. The Stone Temple Pilots also had a hit song on this album as well though, as did The Cure. It wasn’t all about one single song, band, or artist, it was about the concentrated effort to make the album into something great.
These are just a few of the most memorable soundtracks of the 90’s. Feel free to add a few more if you can think of them.
