Proven Innocent is a new show that has started up on Fox. Like its name suggests, it is a legal drama centered on a law firm that specializes in wrongful convictions. As such, Proven Innocent has a promising premise, though it remains to be seen whether it will be capable of fulfilling its potential or not. Here are 10 things that you may or may not have known about Proven Innocent:
1. Focused on Wrongful Convictions
As stated, the show is focused on wrongful convictions. The exact extent of the problem is unknown for obvious reasons, but there are estimates that put the number at multiple percentage points. Regardless, wrongful convictions make for very moving scenarios, which in turn, makes them an excellent choice of subject matter for a legal drama.
2. The Lead Character Is Madeline Scott
The lead character of Proven Innocent is the lawyer named Madeline Scott. Personality-wise, she has been described as being “fierce and fearless.” Moreover, there are some reviewers who have called her “ambitious,” which is a positive trait when her ambition can be summed up as making the world a more just place in her own particular way.
3. The Lead Character Has Very Personal Motivations
Madeline Scott has very personal motivations for being a lawyer who specializes in overturning wrongful convictions. In short, she and her brother were wrongfully convicted as teenagers for the murder of a friend named Rosemary in a sensational trial that turned them into tabloid sensations. Luckily for them, their convictions were overturned, which is why she now seeks to do the same for other innocents.
4. The Lead Character Is Played By Rachelle Lefevre
As for the person who plays Madeline Scott, that would be Rachelle Lefevre. In recent times, some people might remember her because of her role on Under the Dome. However, Lefevre has been in a wide range of other movies and TV shows as well, with examples ranging from Big Wolf on Campus to the Twilight movies.
5. There Is a Very Personal Antagonist
Speaking of which, while Madeline Scott has made a number of enemies because of her bullish tactics in the courtroom, there is one who is a very personal antagonist. Said individual would be state’s attorney Gore Bellows, who was the one responsible for her wrongful conviction when she was a teenager.
6. Gore Bellows Wants to Put Madeline Scott Back in Prison
Some of the marketing that has been released for Proven Innocent suggests that Gore Bellows wants to put Madeline Scott back in prison for the murder of Rosemary. Presumably, this will be motivated by the fact that Madeline Scott will clashing against him in the courtroom, as shown by what happened in the first episode.
7. Gore Bellows Is Corrupt
With that said, it should be noted that Gore Bellows is very corrupt as well. In the first episode, it comes out that he secured a wrongful conviction for Madeline Scott’s client by employing a prejudiced translator as well as securing a falsified statement from her husband. Combined with the story detail that he is running for the position of the state’s attorney general, this promises to make him a threatening antagonist in future episodes.
8. It Is Unclear Who Murdered Rosemary
It seems likely that the mystery of who murdered Rosemary will be one of the recurring storylines of the show. After all, it remains unknown in the “present” of the show, but Madeline Scott has since started looking into things on her own.
9. Madeline Scott’s Brother Was Dating Rosemary Before Her Murder
The first episode revealed that Madeline Scott’s brother was dating Rosemary at the time when she was murdered. However, the two managed to keep their relationship a secret so well that it never came out in spite of the murder trial. When Madeline learned about it, she is horrified because if it comes out, a lot of people are going to think that they really are guilty of the murder.
10. Not Entirely Without Allies
With that said, Madeline Scott isn’t wholly without allies. For example, she runs her law firm in cooperation with Easy Boudreau, who was the lawyer who managed to overturn her wrongful conviction after she had spent 10 years in prison because of it.
