So looking at this movie, if you’ve ever seen it, you would think brain-dead blondes go to high school reunion in hopes of being thought of as anything but brain-dead blondes. That kind of sums up the plot really, but once you dig a little deeper you find that the movie had some meaning to it that a lot of people can identify with and at least understand. Yes, the lead characters play two women that are a bit dippy and don’t have a clue between them but somehow they manage to exist and coexist in a manner that is amenable to their lifestyle. This proves that you can be a dippy blonde and still be able to survive. How, we don’t know, but the fact is that it’s done every day.
With that said, here’s a few things you might not have known about the movie.
10. It was originally a stage play.
Romy and Michelle was started on the stage and were given very minimal attention as their dynamic was only a small part of the bigger picture. In truth if not for the notice they received this movie might never have been made in the first place.
9. Lisa Kudrow really got into character.
Kudrow had this character down pat because let’s face it, it’s not too far off the mark from Phoebe in Friends. The only difference is that Phoebe occasionally has moments of brilliance in which she’s seen as more of a guru than a constant ditz.
8. The main idea was taken from an actual conversation overheard by the screenwriter.
The screenwriter got the idea for this script after overhearing a conversation between two rather insipid women in the bathroom of an LA nightclub. Inspiration strikes just about anywhere at times.
7. They were almost given their own sitcom.
It might have happened if the studio had believed that people could really understand and appreciate the characters, but in the end they didn’t think it was possible. Yeah, because reality TV is so much better.
6. Mira Sorvino had just won an Oscar.
Sorvino was just coming off of an Oscar win for her role in Mighty Aphrodite and actually chose this role. Maybe she felt that she needed a break.
5. The high school wasn’t in Tuscon.
Big surprise right? It should be commonplace to understand that most of the places that movies say their characters are in aren’t exactly on location.
4. You can see Quentin Tarantino’s fake brands in the film.
If you pay attention you can see the Red Apple cigarette brand and the Big Kahuna burger brand in a few spots in the film.
3. Lisa Luder is meant to look different from the other A-list girls at prom.
Despite being a part of the A-list group in high school Lisa eventually struck out on her own and became her own person. She was actually one of those that liked what Romy and Michelle had done with themselves.
2. Kudrow and Sorvino didn’t know each other at first.
They’d never met or worked together before this movie, but by the end they’d become good friends.
1. Janeane Garofalo had worked with the director before.
Her work on the Larry Sanders show is what managed to land Garofalo this job. Her deadpan comedy is something that not a lot of other comics can excel at.
Did you really believe there was this much to the film? Believe me, every film has more than what you can see on the surface.
