A lot of us want to believe that our favorite shows don’t have a lot of darker twists and moments to them that might otherwise mar the way we look at said shows, but the truth is that some of them do have secrets that are anything but positive. A lot of times we won’t hear about said issues since the truth is that a lot of networks don’t want to negative publicity that’s going to come from having their dirty secrets aired out to the public. Yet when someone does blow the whistle, or when something comes out that wasn’t intended, it becomes even worse since the act of hiding the darker side of the show from the people comes with a certain stigma that never really goes away unless the network dumps the show and disavows the idea or can somehow spin things so that the people will find it in their hearts to forgive and hopefully forget whatever they saw and/or heard. Unfortunately trying to bury such information only makes things worse, as it’s been shown in the past. Still, there’s usually been some way for said networks and shows to come back, especially when it comes down to placing the blame squarely on an individual or group rather than taking the brunt of it.
Here are a few darker secrets from a few shows that may or may not have been known by the general public.
10. Northern Calloway from Sesame Street had a few issues.
Apparently one of the most well-known individuals on the show wan’t completely sound of mind since he not only assaulted a woman in a very profound manner but he broke into two homes before he was arrested. His mental state continued to deteriorate until he passed away in the early 90s.
9. Bob Crane from Hogan’s Heroes was into some strange stuff.
It sounds as though Crane was into some seriously dark and twisted stuff in a sexual way, which is typically no one’s business until it’s made public. The way his life ended however made it kind of apparent that he’d been into something that wasn’t entirely healthy, and something that the network and show weren’t willing to associate with.
8. Jimmy Savile was a child abuser apparently.
What’s even darker about this, if that’s possible, is that he became known as a TV personality that would help children achieve their dreams, if only for a day, and as such was an idol among kids. When it was revealed how many kids he’d allegedly abused however his name tanked heavily, as did his reputation.
7. The Dating Game featured at least one known sex offender.
Obviously the game shows back in the day didn’t screen their participants as heavily as they do now, since during one show the man that was chosen was in fact a predator. Thankfully the woman didn’t go on a date with him, trusting her instincts as she stayed away.
6. Emmy Rossum’s private bathroom was turned into a public bathroom as a prank.
This is a prank that could have backfired in a big way since someone on the cast decided to announce that Emmy’s private restroom was public that day and she found a line leading into her restroom when she returned to her trailer. As pranks go it’s one that might be funny if nothing happened, but could have been horrible if things had gone awry.
5. Alternate houseguests on Big Brother didn’t stand much chance of winning a prize.
Anyone selected as an alternate was made to sign a waiver recognizing that if they were selected and they didn’t end up replacing a houseguest that they wouldn’t stand any chance of winning the final prize. Basically this mean that they were there for the experience and little else.
4. Auctions on Storage Wars were fixed.
This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise since a lot of people have been doubting this show for a while when it comes to how it was run. It was entertaining to be certain, but it became another show no matter how much some folks depend on this for their livelihood.
3. A dolphin committed suicide during Flipper.
You didn’t know a dolphin could commit suicide did you? The way animals were treated on movie and TV sets for so long however it wasn’t too surprising that some of them became aggressive and some of them just looked for a way to end it all. It’s dark and depressing but it did happen.
2. The actress that played Marcia Brady on The Brady Bunch had a serious drug addiction.
This feels like something that should have been known already since a lot of child stars went through a great deal of struggle for a long time before policies started changing and protections were created that could keep kids from being overtaxed in any way.
1. Kelsey Grammer was in rehab for at least one episode of his own show.
This is something else that people have come to realize over the years but it was a fairly well-kept secret for a little while as the show was immensely popular during its run.
A lot of shows and movie sets aren’t exactly squeaky clean.
