It’s very rare these days to come across a show about paranormal things without coming across as completely cheesy. Most of the time, if a paranormal show isn’t cheesy, it’s more than likely just trying too hard. That’s the reason why a lot of them don’t last very long. That’s true for all paranormal TV shows except for the long-running Supernatural. It must be the combination of great story telling and amazing acting; or it could be the impressive chemistry between on screen brothers Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, who play Sam and Dean Winchester respectively. Out of all 13 seasons and over 250 episodes, here are the 10 best Supernatural episodes of all-time.
10. Supernatural Season 5 Episode 4 — “The End”
There were a lot of things going on in this episode with past and future characters coming into play. This was the world where Sam actually said yes to Lucifer, thus turning him into Lucifer-Sam. Present day Dean had to face his Lucifer brother, who easily killed the Future Dean that was leading a militia.
9. Supernatural Season 3 Episode 16 — “No Rest for the Wicked”
This season 3 finale was as gripping as ever. The brothers had to fight against Lilith, but this time Lilith was in possession of a little girl’s body. If that’s not creepy enough, let’s consider all the images of Hell that was to become Dean’s fiery future.
8. Supernatural Season 4 Episode 22 — “Lucifer Rising”
This was just another Supernatural season finale that left us all hanging. This was the episode that freed Lucifer from his cage. Hell was unleashed on Earth, and there really wasn’t much left that the brothers could do in order to save the world from the Apocalypse.
7. Supernatural Season 5 Episode 10 — “Abandon All Hope”
Talk about heartbreaking; this episode was probably one of Supernatural’s biggest tearjerkers ever. Of course, we’re still dealing with the mighty Lucifer at this point, and this was how we lost characters Jo and Ellen. They sacrificed themselves (blew themselves up) in order to give Sam and Dean a fighting chance against Lucifer.
6. Supernatural Season 5 Episode 8 — “Changing Channels”
There’s nothing like seeing Sam and Dean in a completely different element in this episode, where they were trapped inside a television show. It was a bit of a jab towards shows like Grey’s Anatomy and other typical Japanese game shows. They dealt with the Trickster the entire episode only to find out later on that the Trickster was actually the archangel Gabriel.
5. Supernatural Season 4 Episode 18 — “The Monster at the End of This Book”
This episode was all about the incredible book that the brothers discovered. It turned out that this book was about the Winchesters themselves. Chuck, the man behind the book, might’ve been God for all the show’s purpose. This episode also spawned quite the online fandom, allowing readers to input the strangest fan fiction there could ever be.
4. Supernatural Season 4 Episode 1 — “Lazarus Rising”
Dean escaped Hell in this episode with the help of Castiel, one of the coolest characters in Supernatural history. Castiel’s entrance is also one of the best moments in the show, and it marked the introduction of angels to the show.
3. Supernatural Season 11 Episode 4 — “Baby”
This is Supernatural through the eyes of the Impala. It was a perspective that we’ve never seen on the show before, let alone on other shows. “Baby” reminded us of what this show was truly all about: family and brotherhood. This episode was full of powerful emotional moments that made it one of the strongest episodes of the show ever.
2. Supernatural Season 6 Episode 15 — “The French Mistake”
This episode was twisted as twisted could be. In this episode, Balthazar throws the brothers into an alternate reality where they were actors named Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. Even more, the actors were on the set of a show called Supernatural. As confusing as that may all sound, it was actually one of the most entertaining episodes of the show. It shouldn’t have worked, but it did.
1. Supernatural Season 5 Episode 22 — “Swan Song”
There’s a trend on this list that gave Season 5 quite a number of spots and for good reason. Season 5 was one of the best seasons ever, and the season finale was simply the best. It was the ultimate showdown between Lucifer and Michael. And we could never get over the fact that Lucifer took over Sam’s body, killed Cas and Bobby, and beat Dean to a pulp. It was all just too much, especially when Sam got a grip on it all enough to get back into the cage to bring Lucifer back to Hell.
