Wouldn’t it Be Awesome if Tom Hanks Played a Total Sinister Psycho Villain?

When you look at the career of Tom Hanks, when has he ever been a bad guy?  Seriously.  When?  The only time he ever compromised morality in a film was his role in Road To Perdition.  But even in that movie, despite his character being a gangster and going on a killing spree, he was still a “good guy” and far more moral than his other gangster counterparts.  So why no villain?  Why hasn’t Hanks played some deranged lunatic?  Clearly he’s got the acting chops for it and you can bet that I along with many others would love to see him in a role like that.  The answer?  Simple.  He just doesn’t want to.  Back in 2013 he gave an interview and said the following on the subject:

“Look, playing bad, I am not interested, ever. I don’t want to see bad guys who are just bad, you know? Why are they bad? There are evil villains out there like, I don’t know, I go, that are intriguing to play. But bad guys do not look bad — they are like you or me. You could have a knife in your shoe, you know?” Hanks went on to comment on his nice guy image, saying that “there’s no substitute for absolute, complete, honesty. There are people out there that lie very easily. I refuse to accept that. If you lie to me, you’re going to be in big trouble.”

Will we ever see Hanks play a bad guy?  As a matter of fact we will.  Hanks and Emma Watson star in The Circle which comes out later this month.  But he’s far from psychotic and “villainy” in it.  Bad guy yes, but still smart as hell.

Mae Holland (Emma Watson) seizes the opportunity of a lifetime when she lands a job with the world’s most powerful technology and social media company. Encouraged by the company’s founder (Tom Hanks), Mae joins a groundbreaking experiment that pushes the boundaries of privacy, ethics and personal freedom. Her participation in the experiment, and every decision she makes soon starts to affect the lives and futures of her friends, family and that of humanity.
