World’s Surf League “Wipeout of the Year” Video Is Tough to Watch

I’ve never surfed a day in my life.  Since a young age I’ve always wanted to learn to surf.  I like watching people surf.  I aspire to surf.  But let’s face it.  I’m now 38 and when in the world am I going to surf?  Plus when I watch videos like the one you are about to see, it makes surfing a little less desirable.  Not that I’d ever even dream of catching a wave like the ones in this video but still, the thought of wiping out just isn’t something I need to involve myself with right now.  Plus you know, sharks.  Turns out this Wipeout video is actually for a grand prize.

Five surfers are duking it out for a $5,000 cash prize from the World Surf League for the most gnarly wipeout. A pretty nice gesture from the WSL for giving money for failed attempts. The finalists include Hawaiian Nathan Florence, brother of current World Surf League champion John John Florence, American Wilem Banks, Australian Danny Griffiths, Briton Tom Lowe, and Chile’s Rafael Tapia. The cameraman who recorded the most spectacular fall will take home $2,000. The winner will be announced on April 29.

This is insane.
