Since ‘The Big Bang Theory’ first hit TV screens on September 24, 2007, it has become one of the most successful sitcoms of all time. Created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, this sitcom has enjoyed a run of 12 seasons on CBS. The sitcom is about Penny, a young aspiring actress, who moves across the hall from two scientists, Sheldon and Leonard. Despite their many differences, she becomes an integral part of their circle of friends and eventually marries Leonard. ‘The Big Bang Theory’ stars an ensemble cast, including Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Melissa Rauch, Mayim Balik, and Kevin Sussman.
Like many sitcoms, ‘The Big Bang Theory’ inspired a spin-off. This spin-off is called ‘Young Sheldon’, and it tells the story of Sheldon Cooper’s childhood and the challenges he faces as a young genius. Jim Parsons, who played the adult Sheldon Cooper in ‘The Big Bang Theory’, narrates the sitcom, while the child version of Sheldon is played by Iain Armitage. Also starring in ‘Young Sheldon’ are Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Montana Jordan, Raegan Revord, and Annie Potts.
After 12 seasons, ‘The Big Bang Theory’ is coming to an end. However, there are no such plans for ‘Young Sheldon’. While still in its second season, CBS renewed the show through to the fourth season. That means viewers will see a lot more of Sheldon Cooper on television screens in the future. However, there has been some debate regarding the ability of ‘Young Sheldon’ to survive as a stand-alone show once ‘The Big Bang Theory’ is over. So, will ‘Young Sheldon’ take a hit when BBT is over?
The consensus among the general public is that ‘Young Sheldon’ will survive despite the sitcom that inspired it coming to an end. The opinion of many viewers is that the series has plenty going for it and that it will appeal to many people. In fact, there are some people that think the spin-off is both better and funnier than BBT, according to IndieWire.
‘Young Sheldon’ has a different type of humor to BBT, but this is not a bad thing. The jokes and puns are more relatable to a wider audience as there is less science-related humor than in BBT. There is also a more diverse range of storylines. There were many that doubted ‘young Sheldon’ would make an impact on viewers and last beyond the first season, points out Independent. However, these predictions were incorrect and ‘Young Sheldon’ has become an instant hit.
One reason for this is that it has appealed to die-hard BBT fans. Many fans of the sitcom have watched both series from the start and will continue to watch ‘Young Sheldon’ once BBT is over. It will allow them to get their fix of the frustrating but hilarious Sheldon Cooper even though the original series will no longer air.
The spin-off also appeals to a new group of fans that are not necessarily fans of BBT. As the prequel focuses on Sheldon’s family and school life, the storylines have completely different themes. Therefore, the people who could not relate to the science-based themes of BBT could potentially have a better understanding of storylines that focus on family and education. Similarly, they may find it easier to relate to some of the characters in the series as they are not all scientists.
Another reason why people will continue to watch ‘Young Sheldon’ is the characters. On the whole, opinion is that ‘Young Sheldon’ has bee cast well. Iain Armitage plays the role of Sheldon as a child perfectly, and it is believable that the little boy would become the quirky character from BBT that we all love. Another great casting decision was to cast Zoe Perry in the role of Sheldon’s mother, Mary Cooper. You may have thought that she looks surprisingly believable as the younger version of Mary Cooper, who is played by Laurie Metcalf in BBT. The Huffington Post points out that this is because Laurie Metcalf is Zoe Perry’s mother in real life.
Something that has appealed to fans of BBT is that ‘Young Sheldon’ gives them the chance to learn more about Sheldon’s childhood and get a better understanding of the way he is in adulthood. In BBT, Sheldon has often talked about his childhood, and fans can learn more about the stories he has related by watching ‘Young Sheldon’. Similarly, fans of BBT wonder on many occasions what has led to him having the quirks, eccentricities, and obsessions he has as an adult. The answers to many of these questions are being gradually revealed in the storylines of ‘Young Sheldon’.
Finally, a further reason why ‘Young Sheldon’ has still got plenty of life in it is that there is still so much more potential in terms of future storylines and character development. Seeing Sheldon and his sibling go through adolescence has excellent potential for attracting audiences. Seeing how the relationship between Sheldon and his siblings develops and how he overtakes them in terms of educational progress will make fantastic viewing. It will also be interesting to see how things develop for other members of the family.
So far, Young Sheldon has been a huge success. The average viewers over the first season were 12.44 million viewers for each episode, and the series ranked sixth in current television series. The full figures are not yet in for season two. However, the episodes are consistently achieving over 11 million viewers each. Therefore, it is remaining popular and there is no reason why CBS should consider canceling the series at this time. As long as viewers are tuning in, the producers will no doubt creating interesting and funny storylines for ‘Young Sheldon’.
