The New Mutants are a Marvel Comics superhero team. Like the name suggests, the members consist of teenage students at Professor X’s school, meaning that they served as a sort of replacement for the initial X-Men line-up, who had become adults by that point in time. The initial line-up of the New Mutants consisted of Cannonball, Karma, Mirage, Sunspot, and Wolfsbane, but it should come as no surprise to learn that the superhero team has seen numerous changes over the course of its existence.
Regardless, the New Mutants were created to capitalize on the success of the X-Men, but as it turned out, the superhero team proved to be rather popular in their own right. Enough so that there is now an upcoming movie called X-Men: New Mutants from 20th Century Fox, which will be featuring Magik, Wolfsbane, Cannonball, Sunspot, and Mirage as its line-up.
What Can We Expect from X-Men: New Mutants?
The New Mutants movie is expected to come out on April 13 of 2018. However, a fair amount of information is known about the movie at this point in time. For example, the people playing the characters have been revealed, as shown by Anya Taylor-Joy having been chosen to play Magik and Maisie Williams having been chosen to play Wolfsbane. Furthermore, Josh Boone has been confirmed as the director, which is in addition to the fact that he wrote the screenplay for the movie. However, the single most interesting piece of news might be the fact that the New Mutants movie is supposed to be the start of a full trilogy of movies centered around the superhero team.
Will X-Men: New Mutants Be the Start of a Full Trilogy?
In an interview, Josh Boone revealed that he had pitched the idea for the New Mutants movie as being part of a full trilogy. To be exact, he pitched them as horror movies, with each successive movie serving as an interpretation of a particular genre of horror movies through the lens of superhero comics. In the case of X-Men: New Mutants, it has been stated that it will be an interpretation of supernatural horror movies, with examples ranging from Hellraiser to The Shining.
This can sound rather strange, but it is not without reason. Some of the most lauded superhero movies in recent times were Logan and the Captain America movies, which have often been compared to westerns as well as political thrillers. As a result, it is not unreasonable to think that a full trilogy of horror movies set in a superhero setting could result in something interesting, particularly since it would be based on existing material.
Of course, there is the matter of the characters who will be standing the spotlight as well. Simply put, the New Mutants are not adult superheroes but rather teenagers struggling to bring their superhuman capabilities under control. As a result, while they could be used as the leads of a standard superhero movie, their particular concerns make them well-suited for other genres as well, thus making Josh Boone’s idea a much more natural combination that it seems on initial inspection. After all, the frequent use of teenage protagonists in horror movies is no coincidence, not when horror movies serve as reflections of societal fears.
