When talking about anything that might concern a celebrity that might be viewed by many as either controversial or highly-decorated it’s usually wise to stay on the safe path and use the most neutral words possible when describing why you won’t bother checking it out. In this case however Demi Moore’s own memoirs don’t seem all that appealing to anyone other than those who might think that she has even a glimmer of a career left. Sasha Savitsky of Fox News and many others are no doubt going to tune in and take a look at Demi’s memoirs when they hit in September since not to do so would seem unfair if a person is going to report on them. But quite honestly it would seem that Demi’s course has kind of run out when it comes to show business, and this could be why the memoirs are coming.
Phil Archbold from Nicki Swift makes a good case as to why we might be able to feel sorry for Demi and actually take a look at her memoirs. After all she didn’t have an easy childhood and she did have to struggle for a while on her way up. In fact she had to struggle while she was one of the elite and some of her problems were made quite public. But while a lot of things did happen in her life one has to ask why, with all the money she was making, could she not afford the kind of help that would have seen her through virtually any problem. The answer is pretty simple, there are some issues that money can’t solve and that don’t just go away with therapy. She’s had her own inner demons for a while and has seemingly never quite got over all of them. But that alone doesn’t seem like it would be a reason to give her the attention she seems to be craving with this memoir.
There are likely those out there that would ask ‘what have you done’, ‘what have you been through’, and many other questions that would follow should anyone offer any criticism of Demi at this point. But the answer is simple, the world is filled with people that have had hard lives, that have struggled, and that have never had the chance at the fame and fortune that this woman has. Many of them would no doubt love to tell their story and recount the days and nights they spent in misery, hoping that someone or something would come along that could help it to end or get better somehow. That’s a story that’s about as endless as any when it comes to life, so in essence, Demi’s story is a rough one to hear, there’s no doubt, but at this juncture in her career it seems to be a cry of ‘pay attention to me’ rather than a bid for any real truth-telling.
I can already feel the critics gearing up as their knuckles crack and their keyboards begin to clack and hum beneath their fingers as they find a way to justify just why Demi would come out with this now of all times and why it would be such a big deal. Has anyone checked the last time she was seen as relevant? Julie Mazziotta from MSN and so many others will gladly take up the banner that announces what Demi has gone through and why she’s ‘strong’ and how her life has been a constant struggle. Very few will say why except as a blurb that tells about what happened to her and why. The cause seems to be drowned out by the need to praise yet another celebrity that has been through dark times that weren’t all her fault but in which she still wasn’t blameless. There’s no need to attack Demi directly since she’s been through enough and persevered, but watching her memoirs and treating them like solid gold instead of a plea to take her seriously again seems like the wool that people are so willing to pull over their own eyes at times.
In her prime Demi was great, she was someone that many people were excited to see and wanted to follow without question. But as time went on and the problems continued to mount her star started to dim and her reputation went with it until things were just about as low as they could go without hitting rock bottom. I have a confession to be honest, I actually liked her in Mr. Brooks, despite the fact that the film wasn’t all that popular, and I liked her because she was a no-nonsense, hard-hitting detective that wasn’t put on a pedestal and wasn’t treated as the overall star of the movie. If there’s any one reason that her memoirs won’t be on the old favorites list it’s because it simply says “I need attention”, and if she wanted that all she needs is another great role to play since she’s still got that kind of talent to display.
