The story of Mama June and Honey Boo Boo is a complicated story. It all began when Alana Thompson was a child. Her mother, June Shannon, entered her youngest daughter into beauty pageants in their small Georgia town. Mama June, as she is regularly referred to, was every bit the pageant mom/stage mom you might imagine, and her daughter went by the nickname Honey Boo Boo. Honey Boo Boo was a personality of the biggest kind. Her Toddlers & Tiaras debut was so popular that the TLC Network offered the family their own show, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” in 2012. For two years, the world watched this family do everything from pageants to living their lives, and the controversy became their middle name. From weight loss and obesity issues to Honey Boo Boo’s older sisters to the show’s cancellation following Mama June’s new relationship with a registered and convicted child molester, we’ve seen it all. We also met Honey Boo Boo’s older sister, Lauryn Pumpkin Shannon. Her sister now has custody of the minor child, and the world wants to know why Lauryn Pumpkin Shannon has Honey Boo Boo.
Lauryn Pumpkin Shannon Was A Child When We Met Her
She’s 22 now, but she was also a small child when we met her. She was 12 when her mother and sister landed their reality show. Now Lauryn Pumpkin Shannon is a mother of three kids and a wife. She’s actually Lauryn Pumpkin Efird. She also has custody of her little sister. It seems Mama June continued to make poor choices following her alleged relationship with a child molester. She tried for a few years to see about other entertainment options as a family, but none were as lucrative as the reality show they could have kept. She appeared on a few other shows, but it was mainly her weight that kept Mama June in the press.
She eventually went on to have some corrective surgery and lost a lot of weight. Mama June was back in the press for her weight loss at that point, but she continued to make poor choices. When she was arrested for possession of drugs in 2019, Lauryn Pumpkin Shannon took over guardianship of her little sister. Their mother, Mama June, is now more than two years clean and sober – and she’s also married. However, she did not get custody of her daughter.
Why Does Lauryn Pumpkin Shannon Efird Have Custody of Her Sister?
Mama June wants the world to know it’s not a scandal or dramatic situation. Her daughter has custody of Alana, Honey Boo Boo because Honey Boo Boo wanted to stay with her sister. She is 17, and she will turn 18 in 2023. She is allowed to pick the person with whom she would like to live, and she chooses her sister. She wanted to stay with Lauryn, and a court awarded Lauryn custody of her slightly younger sister.
Mama June is fine with this. She said her daughter is someone she still talks to regularly. They are in a good place with one another, and things are just fine. She is paying her daughter, Lauryn, child support until Alana turns 18, though. The court ordered her to pay $800 monthly. Mama June has her own reality show – again – but she also has a lot to say about her kids.
“Pumpkin stepping up, I’m very grateful because it could have turned into a bad situation. At the time Alana went to go live with Pumpkin at the beginning, I couldn’t even take care of my own self – more or less take care of anybody else,” she said of her daughters and their current situation.
Mama June is Back on Television
In June 2022, Mama June’s Road to Redemption began airing. The former reality star turned media darling for all the wrong reasons is back. She’s sharing her life now that she is clean and sober, and she’s trying to redeem herself, just as the show title suggests. She’s doing what she can to make up for the time she lost making poor choices, and she seems to be on a better path now. While she might never be some people’s cup of tea, she is trying to maintain good relationships with her kids and grandkids and working her way into their lives as a better example and a better human.
