Why David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Will Be Good for Star Wars

There are a lot of people that aren’t too thrilled to see the creators of Game of Thrones making their way over to the Star Wars franchise, but then again there are a lot of people that are trying to tell those folks to calm down, take a Xanax, and just chill while we see what happens. D.B. Weiss and David Benioff are still catching a lot of flack for the way GoT ended and likely will be for some time to come since a lot of folks feel as though it was rushed and not at all thought through. Funny enough, almost no one is getting on George R.R. Martin’s case when it comes down to the fact that he tripped and sprawled, metaphorically-speaking, when it came to keeping up with his own series. Yes, I’m a writer, yes, I know about deadlines, and yes, I feel confident in saying that Martin had as much time as he needd and more to finish the story, thereby giving the two men something to work with rather than going off on their own to create what, to many of us, will still go down in TV history as one of the most epic shows with one of the most tragic endings ever.

But on to Star Wars. Amanda Kooser from Cnet has indicated that a lot of people aren’t too happy to hear that the GoT creators will be trading swords for lightsabers and some have even signed a petition trying to keep them away from the series. This is kind of amusing given how many people were upset at the directing for the last two movies and would seemingly welcome anyone to the fold so long as they hadn’t been involved in the much-maligned The Last Jedi. Hypocrisy runs in a very wide circle it would seem at times, but before the next Star Wars film gets the Sonic the Hedgehog treatment let’s say this: all the petitions in the world won’t mean much when it comes to Star Wars. There are enough fans out there that love or at least like the direction the movies have been going in to put a hefty VETO on such a petition since they want to see it move forward, not get so riddled with rude and disrespectful remarks that it’s release date will get pushed back. Plus, with the work that Weiss and Benioff have done on GoT it’s proof that they have what it takes to create an epic story with the kind of landscapes and action scenes that keep people riveted and unable to pull themselves away from the screen. Those that needed counseling after GoT’s finale are typically those that don’t seem to understand that a story isn’t always going to go to their liking, but will follow a natural progression that is deemed best for its development, not their mental health.

Besides, as Kris Holt from Engadget has informed us, along with many others, the next Star Wars film following Rise of Skywalker won’t be coming for another three years. Disney+ will no doubt feature many different Star Wars shows that can hold people over and won’t be captained by Weiss and Benioff, but the next film is going to come after a nice long break, so perhaps people can calm down and think this matter through a little more. Those that still have an issue with it might need that petition to dry their eyes when the time comes and it’s decided that Weiss and Benioff are still going to be the guys selected to take on the next Star Wars film, or trilogy as the rumors seem to suggest, since quite honestly a petition is, in this case, more of a suggestion than anything. If people truly want to make a difference when it comes to film and TV it’s advised that they make their own shows, their own movies, and therefore have nothing to complain about when their own ideas are ignored or allowed to flop. Until then their complaints are a great deal of noise that can be easily filtered out.

It might seem like a bold statement but Ryan Britt from Inverse thinks that a Star Wars movie by Weiss and Benioff could possibly transcend GoT. Yes, if your heart fluttered a little bit with that thought then you’re not alone, but it does seem accurate enough of a statement that it could be something we’d be looking forward to in the coming years. While being a fan of Got and Star Wars alike, the very idea that anyone could possibly go above and beyond and create a world within the Star Wars universe that would transcend anything they’ve done to date is dizzying to be honest. But it’s a good sensation, as it means that there’s hope for Star Wars in the coming years.
