It’s not too surprising that there are a lot of people who haven’t heard of La Demi in the past since she’s not exactly someone you would go out and search for unless you were involved with the LGBTQ community or have been watching the show Botched for a while. She was one of the few people that have ever gone on the show and been told that they were fine the way they were, which is kind of an odd thing for the doctors to say since they’re in business to make a profit and to help people achieve the look they want. But in this case, as they’ve shown before, they do have a sense of what’s right and will at least tell people what they think they need to hear. In La Demi’s case it was that she looked just fine the way she was. This is beyond the norm for a show that deals in plastic surgery since more often than not you’ll see people come on the show that need something done to correct the horrible job another plastic surgeon did, or will make a request that the doctors can usually accommodate, but might not want given the risk factors that could arise.
La Demi is a transgender individual that began her transition from male to female on YouTube and Instagram, which seem to be the desired platforms for such things these days, and managed to grow an impressive media following that included a great deal of support and an outreach from like-minded individuals and supporters that followed this journey and gave her inspiring advice and a great deal of attention. Unfortunately this also means that the internet trolls weren’t too far behind since wherever there are supporters and friends to anyone online there are going to be trolls lurking just around the corner waiting to say something negative. However you feel about transgender individuals the one thing that’s been universal since we were kids is that if you don’t have anything nice to say you probably shouldn’t say anything. Of course in a free country where people are raised and weaned on drama and taught early on how to spew hatred and vitriol in so many different ways the rise of the internet trolls was kind of a given.
Apparently many of the trolls stated that she was too manly and that her chin gave her away. Because of this La Demi actually started to take the trolls seriously and figured that to make them go away she would have to have plastic surgery on her chin to make it look more feminine. This is one downfall of the internet however, as soon as anything even halfway interesting is presented where people can see it, those with overly negative attitudes or just have a very mean and nasty streak tend to come out and trash all over anyone they can. You might not fully agree with the idea of who she is or why she’s done what she’s done, but La Demi is a person all the same and deserves at least some respect.
This incident online made her decide to go to see the doctors on Botched and ask about getting her chin shaved down. Just the thought that’s brought to mind when saying the words seems wrong since it sounds as though it might be painful and even prone to issues that might arise later. The doctors confirmed this by saying that the procedure is in fact pretty aggressive and could even lead up to loss of feeling in one’s mouth. Thankfully the doctors decided that it wasn’t necessary and gave La Demi a bit of advice that she’s taken to heart and has used ever since, and that’s to just be herself. It’s amazing how the internet trolls of the world could get to someone so easily and all it took to make her feel better was listening to two noted and respected doctors telling her to just be who she was and not worry so much about what people said.
Since then she’s gone on to try and inspire her more than 100,000 followers on social media to simply enjoy who they are and revel in the idea of being themselves. Some might argue that it’s kind of difficult for anyone that’s made such a transition to say such a thing and be completely transparent about it, but that kind of argument is simply a giant can of worms waiting to be opened and so it’s best left for another day. In this instance however La Demi has been standing up as a truly inspirational individual and showing people, especially transgender youth and adults, that you don’t need to listen to the haters and that you can love yourself for who you are.
