It seems that Supernatural is coming to a conclusion. In March of 2019, Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins released a video revealing that Season 15 of Supernatural will be the show’s last season, which received a fair amount of attention because of how much a fixture in the TV landscape that the show has become for a fair number of TV watchers out there. However, it is important to remember that Supernatural has been much more successful than what people expected when it started up in 2005, meaning that it is better to celebrate its existence rather than mourn the end of said existence.
Why Is Supernatural Coming to a Conclusion?
The conclusion of Supernatural is a subject that has been speculated about for years and years. After all, the initial story arc for the show as imagined by the show creator came to a conclusion in Season 5, which explains why he stepped down from being the showrunner in preference for a less involved role as one of the executive producers. However, Supernatural has managed to continue on for years and years by being too popular to cancel. Amusingly, that hasn’t actually changed. Sure, the Supernatural of the present time isn’t capable of bringing in the kind of numbers that it managed at its height. However, it is still popular enough for it to continue on, which ties in with the cause for its upcoming conclusion.
In short, the people behind Supernatural have discussed ending the show on numerous occasions in the past. On the whole, they had a pretty consistent answer to that particular question, which is to say, they would continue to make Supernatural so long as both Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki remained interested in it. Something that made a fair amount of pragmatic sense because the two actors are the foundation without which the show cannot exist, as shown by the multiple attempts to get a Supernatural spinoff off of the ground that have failed because of their absence.
As such, it should come as no surprise to learn that the choice to end Supernatural has the agreement of not just Ackles and Padalecki but also the other people involved in making the show. Moreover, this isn’t something that they have come up with all of a sudden but rather something that they have been talking about for years and years. As a result, interested individuals shouldn’t hope for a last minute change of mind, though on the plus side, it seems safe to say that they can expect the last season of Supernatural to have had plenty of thought put into it.
In any case, the Supernatural cast and crew’s reason for ending the show is pretty simple and straightforward. Essentially, the logic is that every show suffers from a gradual bleeding of interest and thus viewers, which will weaken it more and more until the time comes from cancellation. Generally speaking, this is a pretty unpleasant process. After all, no one likes seeing a once-beloved show become worse and worse in such a manner. Never mind the pressure of actually being on the cast and crew while said process is happening. Due to this, the cast and crew of Supernatural wanted to make sure that they could go out on a high note while that was still possible, which was apparently motivated by a perception that said process was going to happen sooner rather than later.
Naturally, this is a choice that will meet with a fair amount of disagreement from a fair number of people. After all, Supernatural has been running for a very, very long time, meaning that most Supernatural fans probably aren’t too enthused by the thought that the end is in sight. However, the logic behind the choice makes sense, not least because it ensures that interested individuals will be getting a spectacular finish rather than something much slower and much more agonizing to witness.
What Can We Expect from Season 15 of Supernatural?
Given the sheer amount of escalation that has happened in Supernatural, it is perhaps unsurprising to learn that the stakes laid out by the Season 14 finale are pretty high to say the least. In short, when Dean is about to kill Jack, he has a change of heart. Something that meets with a less than enthusiastic response from God, who is revealed as seeing the Winchester brothers’ experiences as a kind of scripted entertainment for him. Unsurprisingly, an unexpected change of plans isn’t something that he takes with good grace, as shown by his decision to kill Jack before ushering in the apocalypse.
The whole thing is pretty promising in regards to what interested individuals can expect from the final season of Supernatural. First, it is clear that the Winchester brothers and their allies are going to go up against God, which is pretty much the last place that the show can go considering all of the escalation that has happened. Moreover, it is clear that the show retains its characteristic snark, as shown by Dean and Sam’s disgruntlement over being entertainment for someone else, which is a bit on the nose but nonetheless very amusing in a certain light. Something that speaks well for the final season. Second, it seems that the final season will feature a greatest hits compilation of the Winchester brothers’ previous enemies. This is because with all hell breaking loose, the souls in hell are making a return to the face of the Earth. As a result, while it would be unreasonable to expect every character ever to pop up, it seems likely that there are going to be a lot of familiar faces.
Further Considerations
On the whole, Season 15 of Supernatural is looking promising, though time will tell whether it will be capable of living up to that promise or not. For that matter, time will tell what will happen with the Supernatural fandom in the times to come. It isn’t uncommon for sci-fi and fantasy fandoms to continue on for years and years after the initial source material wraps up, particularly if they are fed a steady stream of side materials. Something that might come as some consolation for the less happy Supernatural fans out there.
