Whatever Happened to the Cast of “Dirty Rotten Survival?”

National Geographic is known for bringing forth shows that some people watch with great interest and others just look at and decide to keep going until they find the right channel for them. Dirty Rotten Survival however is a unique kind of show that might be worth taking more than just a glance at since it’s actually pretty interesting. Three men that have three very different skill sets travel around the fifty states and try to reinvent the great American road trip using the skills they’ve learned to compliment one another throughout the trip. Each state they come to they’re given a new outdoor challenge and a limited set of tools that they are supposed to use to complete it. The trick however is that they absolutely have to do something that’s unconventional and that they haven’t done before, so you can imagine that it’s been a serious challenge to come up with new ideas and ways to trip them up just to see how inventive they’ll get. It’s not exactly a vacation but it is a way towards discovery from a very innovative standpoint.

So let’s see what the cast has been up to.

Dave Canterbury

Dave is the kind of guy you want with you if you’re ever stuck out in the woods and need to find a way to survive or just to get back to civilization. He looks a little wild and a little rough but the guy knows his stuff and was the expert on how to survive in the wild during the show. At this time he’s the owner and one of the instructors at the Pathfinder School in Ohio. With what he can teach people about surviving in the wild it’s fair to say that those that listen should be able to find their way through just about any wild area.

Dick Strawbridge

Strawbridge has remained largely in the spotlight as much as he can while taking on projects that are based in reality more often than not. He seems to enjoy these types of shows as they are based more in reality and less on dramatic flair, as he doesn’t seem to be much in the way for theater, at least not when it comes to acting. The biggest reason he’s even on a lot of these shows is that he is a very astute engineering and environmental expert with a wealth of knowledge that was quite advantageous for a show such as this. While he wasn’t quite the survivalist that Dave was the know-how he carried around with him was more than beneficial to the group.

John Littlefield

As an actor John has been on quite a few shows and has showed up in a slew of movies as well, one of those being the notoriously bad Hulk that was thankfully forgotten. But his career has been kept steady even after the cancellation of Dirty Rotten Survival and he’s been in the spotlight more than once throughout the last several years as he’s found ways to keep himself relevant and still capable of finding jobs. In fact reality shows seem to be his thing really since he does tend to show up on them from time to time.

Right off the bat this is the kind of show that a lot of people would look at and call fake, phony, and completely made up. But the trick of it is that while the trio was being filmed the entire time and they weren’t in any danger they never really acted like they were to begin with. They had a film crew along to document the whole thing, and unlike many other reality shows they tended to practice what they preached in order to show people that what they were doing was real-world application of their skills in ways that would allow people to know that they were legit. Granted, there was probably a lot of footage that didn’t make it into the show and a lot of stuff that people would gladly say makes it less than dangerous or less than impressive. But quite honestly it wasn’t about the guys needing to be in a dangerous spot every night. It was about them using their skills to make it through one challenge after another. If there was any faking done then so be it, the show was still entertaining.

Quite honestly though it doesn’t seem like anyone was really faking anything in this show and they backed up their words pretty frequently. Real-world application of one’s skills is usually pretty impressive, especially when it’s done in plain sight and without any obvious cuts to the film. Whatever people want to say about this show the one thing you should be able to know is that these guys were at least showing everything they were doing up front.
