What We Learned from the Black Mirror Season 5 Trailer

Black Mirror Season 5 Trailer

If you take a beat from Lisa Respers France from CNN then you might be of the mind that Black Mirror season 5 is going to be something that’s deep enough that you can’t really see it all in the trailer but enticing enough that you’ll want to see it come to fruition. The release of the next season is slated for this coming June and from the trailer it seems to promise that it’s going to be something unique and thrilling as we’ve come to expect from this show. With an increasing reliance upon technology and the strange but noticeable effect this has had upon humanity Black Mirror is becoming more and more a show that seems to highlight our obsession rather than tell a fantastical tale that is nowhere near close to being realistic. True, each story is fiction and goes beyond anything that we might know about in real life, but it’s still tempting enough to think that one of these days, possibly sooner than anyone is really trying to contemplate, our love affair with technology will culminate into a bond that no longer recognizes what an OFF switch is.

From the moment we wake to the moment our eyes close for the night many of us are drawn to technology in a very big way. This show definitely brings that to the attention of the viewers the intimacy that we have with our technological devices and how they influence our daily lives in so many different ways. With that said however this season is going to be shorter than the others admittedly since it’s only going to feature three new episodes and will be a bit more politically-minded according to those who are in the know. This might not mean much to some people since there are those who tune in just to see the nihilistic views that are presented with each story, but in this season it almost feels as though things might tone down just a bit from the same active pace that the previous seasons have moved ahead with.

Tom Parfitt from the Independent has confirmed what many already know by stating that Anthony Mackie, Miley Cyrus, Topher Grace, and a few other big names will be joining the fun as season 5 rolls along, and will take up their own roles within the stories that are being pushed. Such big names usually means that there’s a monumental story line coming, or that they’re actors that aren’t really selling anywhere else and need a place to land. These are different times however since the truth is that every big name on the roster for season 5 are still quite active and are bound to bring a big up to the show since they do happen to be quite popular still and are definitely a bonus to a show that, despite already being popular, is still gaining traction with some fans. One can’t help but think that the show looks absolutely awesome no matter which season you look at, but the idea of technology being almost a cult or an obsession is something that a lot of people still don’t want to face. Black Mirror tends to look at things with a very dark humor that some folks either don’t get or don’t care for, but is absolute gold to those that understand and enjoy it. In this world it’s been seen that the darker the sense of humor a person has the more adaptable they are to more situations. It’s a rumor at least, not much else.

The whole idea of the show and its look at technology and how its rooted its way into our lives is kind of disconcerting at times but it’s unfortunately quite true. Think about life as it was just a few decades ago and look at it now and you’ll see the vast difference. Where once we used to look the sky, the horizon, anywhere but to what we held in our palms, now we look at a screen that churns out multi-colored images faster than we can process and will grant our every wish if we give over the information that it desires, demands, or simply asks for. That’s the world of technology and the gods we now worship in our own ways since we can’t find a way to do without them at times. Black Mirror is a show that is reminding us in many different ways what technology is really here for and what it seems fit to do, and how our lives have changed because of it. Seriously, does anyone still remember what life was like before we had the technology we have now? Our kids won’t, and in time we might even feel the memory begin to fade. That’s one message the show has been pushing since it started it would seem.
