What We Learned from the Birds of Prey Teaser

One thing we can definitely pull from the Birds of Prey teaser is that Harley is well over the Joker as Zack Sharf from IndieWire mentions and it’s even using IT: Chapter Two’s music and very well-known music to introduce this idea in one of the teasers. some fans might bristle a bit at this imagery since it seems to imply that Birds of Prey might be taking aim at the very core of the movie and stating that it will be looking to do better than any picture once it comes out, but that seems like a lot of paranoia that I’m not going to bother continuing. Instead it’s more likely a fun play at the fact that Harley seems to have broken free from the Joker and is moving on to do her own thing, which has happened in the comics and seems to be an awakening of sorts. How it works out on the big screen might be kind of interesting since people are still torn over Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Joker and are likely thinking that Harley could have done without him for a long time now.

Cooper Hood from ScreenRant has pointed out a few things about the movie that were seen in the teaser, such as Huntress, Black Canary, and a few other things, but I feel the necessity of pointing out a few things of my own, such as the prediction that no matter how many people turn out this movie is going to be something of a disappointment. I know, that sounds entirely too cynical and it seems as though I might be eating my words when it hits theaters in 2020, but there are reasons for it I assure you. One is that as great as Harley Quinn was portrayed by Margot Robbie despite the very chunky and chopped up manner in which Suicide Squad was presented, she seems to be less her own character than a spinoff desperately trying to make a case for having her own movie. What’s kind of tragic about this is that she IS a great character and she DOES deserve a movie that explores her entire history in a very profound way. But this doesn’t seem to be it thus far. Maybe there’s more to it than we’re seeing and, like I said, maybe I’ll be eating my words as of next year, but at this moment Birds of Prey really feels like an attempt to bust out that will only end in confusion and a serious lack of direction that won’t do Harley any real justice. On top of that, it also seems as though it might confuse people as to the identities of Black Canary and Huntress as well. Both characters need a definite plan of attack when it comes to arriving on the scene since at this point casual fans might know little to nothing about them. Those that have watched them show up in the comics and on TV might know a great deal more, but when transitioning to the big screen there’s a huge difference since the audience grows exponentially, but the overall knowledge of who they are doesn’t seem to keep up.

Another thing that might work against the movie from the start is that the trailers are being shown on the web but are only being officially released by Warner Bros. in the movies, so a person absolutely HAS to go to the movies to see them in their full glory. Richard Newby from The Hollywood Reporter has stated that this is frustrating fans but also seems to think that it might bump up the theater revenue as people actively go to the movies to watch this teaser. Yeah, that’s not quite how it works with a lot of people, but there are those that are nutty enough to think it’s a good idea since that minute or less of footage seems to assuage their need for something more. For the rest of us that don’t care enough to make our way to the movie theater just to get our fix of Harley Quinn the online version might be okay, but it seems to grant only enough of an idea that the movie is already starting to look like something out of the CW. You might ask ‘what’s wrong with that?’ and the answer of course would be nothing at all, save for the fact that it’s being brought to the big screen and therefore needs to have a bit more to it than a TV production can offer. Hopefully there will be a bit more to the movie than we’ve seen thus far since otherwise the fans are going to be as over this movie as Harley is over clowns before the movie has a chance to open.
