So what did we learn from the season 3 trailer of Big Mouth? One is that I’m thankful this wasn’t around when a lot of us were teenagers since puberty was awkward enough at times. The next thing that we learn is that this coming season is going to be all kinds of messed up shenanigans coupled with the idea that it’s all okay because it’s an animated show and will be wrapped up in a big blanket called artistic freedom while being doled out to anyone and everyone that knows how to work a remote control. Apart from that and the prudish thoughts that might arise the big lesson from this coming season is that things are only getting a lot more crazy and are bound to make a lot of jaws drop as people that are already well aware of what’s coming might be ready and willing while others might feels as though they’ve entered an alternate reality where cartoons are now geared more like adult shows and vice versa. Well, that kind of makes sense really in some ways.
Over and over I’ve said that this cartoon, animated feature if you like, is something that’s beyond disturbing and yet at the same time is hilarious since goes over the issue of puberty in a big way and seems fully intent on showing just how hard it can be, no pun intended, to navigate through one’s younger years before they become a, hopefully, well-adjusted teenager. Like anything else this show is one of those that is going to be what it is no matter what people want, and if people don’t like it they don’t have to watch. But seriously it either brings back memories of how many of us dealt with puberty or makes us think that the creator might have had a rough time of it when they were going through those changes. This is a rough time after all in anyone’s life since no matter who you are it tends to be kind of difficult at times when these years come around.
As of October 4th fans will be able to access new episodes that will continue to show them the ongoing development of the main characters in a way that is only getting more graphic and more disturbing as their sexuality is being explored and their psychological development is forced to keep up. Does anyone remember these times in their own lives? It was a very uncomfortable and very difficult moment in anyone’s personal history since it came with a great deal of uncertainty and the idea that exploring your sexuality was natural but best kept under lock and key and to yourself. Those developments that came in public however were just as embarrassing since one’s body doesn’t always wait for the right moment to do one thing or the other when it comes to showing everyone that puberty has hit you full on with the force of a hammer and a decided lack of decorum. The voice changes, the sexual urges, and everything that goes along with it tend to come along at the worst possible moments and don’t seem to take into account just what might happen. The personification of such things in this series is enough to make a person laugh but also to make them sit and wonder just what they could have done differently back in the day.
That isn’t all the show will be getting into however since that’s not all that kids deal with these days when it comes to the biological act of becoming adults. Toxic masculinity, as Nicolaus Li of Hypebeast mentions, will be on blast as well and will no doubt make some fans face-palm and shake their heads. This has been a massive issue as of late and it’s not too hard to believe that Big Mouth will take this on just as many other shows have throughout the past couple of years, but will also satirize it in a big way since not only is it kind of ridiculous, but it’s a big part of how the world as we know it, for better or worse, has been able to keep running. The ideas that Big Mouth season 3 will be pushing are undoubtedly bound to offend some and amuse others since honestly it would seem that the show is bound to go over the top in such a way that trying to rein it back in is not only impossible but isn’t exactly advisable either. While I might not fully approve or throw my support behind this show I can’t help but think that it’s going to extremes that are still somewhat beneficial if they’re explained and taken in the form of satire as they have been. Taking this show seriously isn’t bound to help anyone make sense of it. Embrace the crazy just as you had to when you were still a teenager being repeatedly slapped by puberty. You got through it then, you’ll get through it now.
