It’s going to end, as Vinnie Mancuso of Collider will agree, and that’s one of the biggest things that we’ve learned from the Arrow season 8 trailer. Even with the spinoffs, the possible Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, this is Oliver Queen’s last run on TV as far as we know and will no doubt be one of the most action-packed seasons ever. That’s more than evident in the trailer since bodies are flying in every direction with such frequency that you might hear Drowning Pool’s song Bodies ringing in your ears as the action continues. That’s going to be the easy part to stand since there are plenty of familiar faces making their way onto the screen and it’s likely that we might suffer from a bit of overload by the time the season is over. People should remember that this isn’t the end of DC’s run on the CW, but likely it’s going to play out that a lot of folks will still be lamenting the end since Oliver has been a loved character now for quite some time. After all you don’t get to keep a show such as this unless people really connect with it, and somehow Green Arrow has been the kind of hero that people look up to in a big way. Why is that though?
This is a hard question to answer in a definitive manner really since when you look at vigilantes such as Arrow in one way, they’re considered heroes since they’re devoted to taking out the bad guys and are bound to do so in a manner that doesn’t allow the bad guy to come back. Of course some would call that murder and state that the ends don’t justify the means and that Arrow is somewhat antisocial and doesn’t really connect with the people he’s trying to save. In other words he’s out for justice but has somehow made himself the arbiter of said justice and isn’t about to allow anyone else to tell him what’s right and wrong. In a way it’s like saying Batman is right and wrong depending on the situation since he too is pretty antisocial and strikes fear into just about as many law-abiding people as he does criminals. That whole ‘justice’ angle that drives Arrow is great and all but it seems to cross the line a time or two and has done this pretty much throughout his entire run as he’s been the type of hero that tends to take justice into his hands more often than not. People have praised him and found Arrow to be one of their favorite heroes throughout the years largely because of this and it’s evident that we love anti-heroes and vigilantes simply because they eliminate the problem when law enforcement will not. Living in a world where some of the worst individuals that commit some of the worst crimes tend to go free or incur lesser punishments at times it seems only natural that a lot of people would get fed up and want simple street justice after a while.
But back to season 8 and why it’s going to be off the chain. One reason is given by Filiz Mustafa of Digital Spy and it has a lot to do with the fact that we’ll be seeing faces that were already taken out of the series such as his sister, his mother, and his friend Tommy Merlyn. Expect that there will be some serious time traveling in this season since it would appear that they’re trying to wrap a few things up and answer a few questions at the same time. Plus, this adds a good deal of conflict as to whether Arrow will be able to protect his family and Star City or if he’ll have to make a tough choice that will end in the only way that a lot of people are expecting. It’s never easy to watch a hero fall, especially one that’s gained such a huge following, but after season 8 it’s been established that Steven Amell will be moving on. There are bound to be plenty of spinoffs that will come along and there’s no doubt that at least one or two of them will do pretty well, but the chances are that none of them will quite live up to what Arrow created. The kind of buzz that an original show can create is a very high bar to reach and spinoffs are pretty much like sequels in that regard, they don’t often reach that high for one reason or another, but more often it’s because the fans simply don’t connect with those that come after as they did with the original. With that in mind however the next and final season of Arrow looks like it’s going to be nothing short of an action-packed thrill ride, so tune in.
