There isn’t much to tell about Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods, but the title does make it sound as though the hero is going to be up against another challenge that will be even tougher than the last one, especially since he was able to outwit his opponent and play on the emotions of the deadly sins that he fought against. It sounds as though most of the cast will be returning for the second movie, and of course, Helen Mirren will be joining the cast as the villainous Hespera, which is bound to be a bit of a treat since Mirren is a very celebrated actress working among a group that have their own accomplishments to celebrate but still aren’t even close to the level that Mirren has reached in her long career. It’s a bit premature to think that this movie will be every bit as good as the first one, but so far Shazam stands as one of the success stories of the DC universe, and if it becomes more integral to the shared universe it would all kinds of awesome since Shazam is one of the powerhouses of the brand and could be a huge asset moving forward. The thing about this movie though is that there’s more comedy laid into the story than has been seen with the others, so it’s hard to think of how it could integrate while keeping its lighthearted tone.
There’s a good chance of keeping that whimsy with Mirren since she’s been seen to be capable of being deadly serious but has also managed to add to the humor in her own way over the years, as she can be elegant or streetwise, or both, depending on what is needed for a movie. Helen’s talents are plentiful enough that she should be able to put on an acting clinic, but it’s more likely that she’ll find a way to integrate with the rest of the cast and become a valued part of the project over the course of filming. Many of her characters have been fun to watch over the years and it’s very fair to say that she’s highly adaptable and versatile when it comes to taking on a role, which will help her immensely in this movie since movies based on comics tend to get a little crazy now and then thanks to the fantastical nature they bring to the screen. Of course, we’re talking about a woman that’s been in movies such as Red and The Fast & Furious too, so she’s no stranger to changing things up now and then to get the job done.
All we really know about her character is that she’ll be playing someone that’s not associated with the comics, which is interesting since it will be a bit of a deviation from other stories, which have used well-established and known characters. It’s not often that a comic book movie will seek to use someone that hasn’t been seen more than once in the comics or in other stories, but considering that we’re still dealing with mythology when talking about Shazam, it’s not too hard to think that the writing room would contain a few ideas that might feel as though they came out of left field after being ignored for a while. It could even be an attempt to do something that people haven’t seen as much in the recent past since a lot of hero movies tend to stick with villains that people know a little about, or will tweak them just a bit in order to make things a bit more interesting. One thing is very possible though if Mirren is going to be the main villain then the real challenge for Shazam will either be a moral conundrum, or there will be another huge and glaring opponent that has to be dealt with since like it or not, people want to see Shazam fight a villain, and seeing Zachary Levi put the smackdown on someone like Helen Mirren doesn’t really fit the bill for a great fight. Mirren is the type of individual who, as a villain, would likely eviscerate someone with her wit and words, and leave the more physical aspects to someone else that has a bit more power behind their swings. Given the fact that she is an intelligent and clever individual though, watching Mirren trick or tear someone down emotionally is kind of fun since it proves that she’s far more adept at breaking a person than anyone might give her credit for.
So far all we really know is that Mirren will be in the movie and that it will be arriving in 2023, which is a while to wait, but plenty of time to start up rumors and theories that will keep the fans happy.
