The final episode of season five of Blinders held a number of surprising twists and turns. For the first time, the issues that the Shelby Company were facing were not all resolved by the end of the season. Thankfully for fans, it has already been confirmed that there will be a season six. Some of the burning questions that fans will want the sixth season to answer are listed below.
Does Tommy Kill Himself?
The answer to this question is likely to be no. Without Tommy, there would be no Shelby Company as he is the one that holds everything together, even with the mental health issues that he has been dealing with in season five. He has been suffering with PTSD from the war since the first season but in season five he has been having visions of his late wife Grace and he has contemplated suicide on more than one occasion. The Sun also point out that in the final episode he was told by Charlie that both his mother and her father had killed themselves. There seems to be much more to Tommy’s story to come and so it seems unlikely that he would be killed off, although nothing can be ruled out.
Who Stopped Mosley’s Assassination?
The person that prevented the assassination of Oswald Mosley could have only been someone that knew all the details of the plan. Throughout season five, Tommy had been having a dream about a black cat, which is said to represent a traitor close by. The Express has made a list of suspects that could have been responsible for betraying Tommy. Whoever it was had to be someone close to him as they knew all the details of the planned assassination, including where Barney would be hiding and the fact that Aberama and Arthur would be waiting in the wings at the side of the stage. This was not information that would have been available to just anyone which does keep the list of suspects quite small. It also means that he has been let down by someone he trusts and there are sure to be consequences for whoever it was that betrayed him.
Will Alfie Solomons Have A Bigger Role In Season Six?
The final episode of season five saw the reveal that Alfie Solomons survived being shot by Tommy at end of season four. He has already helped Tommy by sending his Jewish friends to Bingley Hall to create unrest. The motives behind this help are not clear as there is a question about whether he would have helped Tommy so willingly after he tried to kill him. NME points out that there has been no confirmation that Tom Hardy will return for season six. That being said, there has been no confirmation of any of the cast definitely returning for the sixth season so this does not mean that a bigger part for Alfie should be ruled out.
Will We See More Of Gina’s Family?
When Michael was putting forward his plan to take over the opium side of the business and take it Stateside, he mentioned that this was something Gina’s family may be able to help with. This suggests that they may have criminal connections of their own. Gina herself made reference to the fact that her family were a force to be reckoned with. She has made it clear to everyone that she wants to raise her and Michael’s child back in the US rather than in Small Heath. If she is forced to remain in Birmingham, then some of her family may decide to come to her.
Will Polly Really Resign?
Polly has handed in her resignation and plans to leave Tommy and the rest of the Shelby’s behind. However, as it stands at the end of season five she is unaware that her plans for a new life with Aberama Gold will now come to nothing as he was brutally murdered during Mosley’s speech. It will be interesting to see how she reacts when she learns of his death. She may blame Tommy for everything that happens and therefore stick with her decision to leave the company. The other way that it could go is that she teams up with Tommy in order to get revenge on whoever was behind the attack. Whether she would come back to the company after that remains to be seen.
Who Was Billy Grade On The Phone To?
It seems that Billy Grade has been carefully using Finn to get information about the Shelby’s business. When Finn let slip about the fact that a fascist was about to be assassinated, Grade picked up the phone as soon as Finn has left. We don’t know who he was phoning or what he said but several fans noticed that Finn did not seem to be present during the rally and the aftermath. Could the phone call have had something to do with this non-appearance? It is possible he tipped someone off about the planned assassination but he would not have been aware of all the details and the location of Barney and Aberama. There is a good chance that he is not the traitor but he still could be up to something else.
Production for season six is due to start in November and the scripts for the first three episodes of the season are already in place. There was almost 18 months before the end of season four and the beginning of season five. If season six follows the same timeline, then it is likely to be in the early part of 2021 when it will be aired. This is a long time to wait but there are likely to be more details that will come to light when production begins and the release date starts to get nearer. The writer of the program, Steven Knight has already stated his wish that the series will last for at least seven seasons and so there is sure to be a lot more to come for the Shelby family.
