John Cena as Ferdinand the Bull. Hm. It could work. He’s been a voice actor in the past already and in some cases it kind of seems like he might be looking for a way to transition into something else when the wrestling gig finally takes its toll on him. He’s actually been talking about retirement for a little while now and maybe it’s getting close to time. As fake as it is wrestling is still a lot higher impact than acting, and maybe Cena might need a little bit of a break finally.
As someone that’s expected to fight you can definitely see the correlation between Cena and Ferdinand. His character on the WWE is that of a fighting champion when he wears the belt and a fighter no matter what when he doesn’t. He’s never really been the People’s Champ, since that title’s belonged to The Rock for a long time, but he’s definitely been the Champ no matter if he wears gold or not. The boos and jeers that people tend to levy at him are now more out of respect than anything simply because it’s what he feeds off of. And really, when you’re playing a character it’s not much different than acting other than the fact that in most acting roles you don’t have to get powerslammed to the mat every so often.
But the reason why it seems like Cena might be ready to call it a day at WWE is being seen in how little he’s actually around the ring these days. He’s still active and gets to move between brands as he likes, but the feeling is that he’s starting to make a transition that might see him step down from his current role in the next few years or less. The loss that he underwent to the current up and comer, Roman Reigns, just last night makes it seem that he’s getting ready to make his way to the exit and might be trying to usher in the next face of the franchise.
Even if Reigns isn’t universally liked it still doesn’t seem to matter since, like Cena, he’s being booed no matter what he does. Cena fed off of it since he’s always been a fighter, though like Ferdinand it was always expected of him. He came into the WWE looking like an aggressive individual, while Ferdinand is seen that way just because of who and what he is. The assumptions that are made of people aren’t always fair or right, but they’re made all the same because this is how society tends to compartmentalize people on a regular basis.
The movie itself looks pretty cute and might enjoyable as a family outing. The fact that it features Peyton Manning is kind interesting, and Kate Mckinnon is always a treat to listen to since she’s just so hilarious. Ferdinand could be a way for Cena to finally find his footing in Hollywood since it allows him to calm down and just be himself rather than go all stiff on the big screen. It might just work as a more effective transition from the WWE.
