We already knew from watching the movie that Shuri was awesome, but the genius princess from Black Panther is obviously genius when it comes to freestyle as well. The rap she comes up with on the set of the film supposedly didn’t come out until after the movie was in theaters but it’s something that might be worthy of calling a feisty start to something that could be a career move or at least a hobby for Letitia Wright. Her freestyle is pretty great to listen to really and if she could do this on the spur of the moment then what’s to stop her from doing it professionally? Okay, there might be a little thing called her acting career, which is bound to keep moving upward with this film, but it could at least be something she does on the side.
As Shuri she’s the genius of the family that works the tech and develops new gadgets for her brother, T’Challa, the king and hero of the movie. While T’Challa is intelligent Shuri is flat out genius since she comes up with the kind of tech that makes what we saw in the Avengers look tame by comparison. Imagine a nation that wielded the kind of devices and weapons that Wakanda is capable of and then think about what good could be done as well. Shuri is also a very important character as she shows that women can do just about anything they put their mind to and still be the free-wheeling, fun-loving individuals that they want to be. Shuri isn’t so much tame as she devoted to her family and her country, and is willing to do whatever it takes with the skills she has to protect both.
She’s not the warrior that her brother is, or that his guard is, but she makes up for that in terms of her intelligence if not her overall wisdom. She’s not a foolish girl but she does possess a certain amount exuberance that when pushed too far can hinder more than help her. But in terms of who she is in the movie, Shuri is the right person to have around when you happen to need something that can help in a fight. The Black Panther movie is a great film for the fact that it showcases a lot of culturally significant images, even if Wakanda is fictional, and keeps everything interesting in terms of playing up to its movie hero status.
Shuri is the kind of defiant and headstrong member of the royal family that does as she’s asked and commanded but still follows her own path a lot of times in attempting to find her way forward in the world. She’s all about her family and country, but she also has her own style and doesn’t compromise it much if at all. In a superhero movie this is typically the kind of character that won’t come out and fight, but Shuri proves that she will do this as well as she goes against Killmonger and almost ends up as his next victim. She’s a tough character, but Shuri is more the brain than the brawn.
