After a very long three week break The Vampire Diaries returned with the locomotive speed that we have come to expect from this show; death, destruction, plans gone wrong, sexual tension, surprises and more sacrifices than the title would suggest.
For a longer recap for all the many plots from this week check out the always excellent Mark O. Estes here.
Both Elena and Jeremy were both called stupid for what seemed like impulsive and reckless acts; Elena sacrificing herself for the sake of her friends and family, not wanting to end up like Katherine with everyone slaughtered and with Jeremy trying to protect Bonnie from a spell that he feared would do her health great harm. Despite the stupidity of these attempts they were both honourable and I’m glad that these two characters are anything but passive, shame that like any plan this wasn’t perfect (thanks Damon for this observation, nice to see a TV character acknowledge this fact). I also appreciated that Elena is willing to lie and manipulate to get her way by promising vampire groupie Alice the vampire turning she desires, is Elena becoming a little like Katherine/Damon?
Jeremy’s actions and subsequent outcome of becoming both Katherine’s play thing and snack bar led to the big sacrifice of the evening, Stefan with little options played the hero and martyr ending up trapped in the tomb with Katherine. aside from getting out of the tomb this would definitely be a preferred option from our favorite psychotic. Now Stefan has to contend with knowing that Damon is the one looking out for Elena and considering how heated and physical the conversations got between Damon and Elena is this something that he should indeed be concerned with? These moments between Damon and Elena really crackled with tension and showed that they really do have a complex relationship.
This was a week of the love triangle express with no one getting what they wanted (except maybe Katherine and definitely Jenna and a fabulously naked Alaric), so many near misses of shared moments and almost kisses. Bonnie can’t succumb to Jeremy, is it because she still sees him as her BF’s little brother or because of the magical bond that she now shares with Luka? Tyler and Caroline who have known each other for years and have never really been friendly now share a secret and a common fear of their new state, where does this leave Matt who looked so miserable I just wanted to step in to the screen and give him a hug? Now with Stefan trapped with Katherine I’m wondering what deliciously twisted games we will see played between the two and what repercussions this will have on those not in the tomb, I’m thinking it’s going to get messy.
To the big ‘huh’ and a badass moment that even made Damon look impressed; Elijah ripped the hearts out of the two guys who were there to get Elena for Klaus and not only let team Elena live but also let them go free. This in itself was curious followed by seeing Elijah and Dr Martin who had spent the entire episode being super creepy and suspicious discussing keeping Elena safe, but safe for what? I’m glad that these two aren’t the traditional villains but I still don’t trust them, they really don’t seem motivated for good.
This week felt like the table is being set for a really superb midseason finale; a full moon is upon Mystic Falls which means Tyler is not going to have a fabulous time, Stefan is trapped with Katherine (though from next weeks preview it looks like they might find something to occupy themselves with), Bonnie is a “semi-competent witch” and Elena feels like she is to blame for all the ills of everyone else. Whilst these guys might not be having the times of their lives I’m definitely enjoying these developments. A
