As fellow Vampire Diaries fan and blogger Emma Frazer tweeted to me earlier today, it seemed like ages had passed before a new TVD episode fell in our lap. However, that sentiment went out the window after watching tonight’s episode, which kept up the tour de force pace before it went on hiatus. New developments, cliffhangers, and turned tables were on the forefront tonight, setting us up for next week’s midseason finale which is sure to drive us fans insane until the new episodes of next year. So let’s get to the recap!
Unusual Ingredients
As Elena is in her bed, Jonas Martin stalks the house and accidently wakes her up. Elena finds Alaric and Jenna in a compromising position while searching for the source of the noise, thinking it was them. While talking to the couple, Jonas steals hair, a picture of Elena, some trinkets, and a mirror from under their nose and exits the house. What in God’s name is he about to conjure?
The Plan to Save Elena
Damon and Stefan try to make a deal with Katherine to turn over the moonstone, which Ktherine offers as a bargain for her freedom along with her self-banishment from Mystic Falls. The guys run their plan by Elena, which involves breaking the spell that requires Elena’s blood as a sacrifice. Elena disagrees with this scenario, due to it possibly putting everyone she loves in danger. The guys go ahead with it anyway.
Meanwhile, Bonnie learns a new bewitching trick from Luca about how to channel another witch by using his dog tags as a conduit. The scene is nothing short of beautiful and visual eye candy for me, but I digress. Jeremy appears and gets all judge-y against his competition, but Bonnie brushes it off by defending her new friend. Bonnie also notices that she forgot to give Luca back his dog tags. Foreshadowing…
Bonnie and Jeremy meet up with the Salvatores to figure out how to retrieve the moonstone without getting hurt. The initial suggestion is to lower the shield to the tomb long enough for the Salvatores to retrieve the moonstone, but Bonnie comes up with a far simpler plan as she does a spell to create some ashes to subdue Katherine long enough for the Salvatores to not have to fight her. The spell works, but Jeremy protests Bonnie’s involvement the entire time, his feelings for her in full gear, especially after they almost kiss again. After Bonnie declares herself to be strong and willing for the task, Jeremy still goes behind her and the Salvatores’ backs by getting some of the ashes and going rogue to tackle Katherine. He manages to take her down with a stake and the ashes long enough to get the moonstone, but Katherine still gets the upper hand, attacking and feeding on him. However, Jeremy does manage to toss the moonstone pass the threshold of the tomb.
While Damon answers a call from Rose, Stefan and Bonnie discover the craziness going on in the tomb and Bonnie goes into witch mode, but she’s not strong enough to do it alone. Then she remembers Luca’s dog tags and channels his power from a huge distance. The pull is too much, causing both witches to have nosebleeds. As Katherine’s frustrations on not being released is about to take a deadly toll on Jeremy, Stefan sacrifices himself by running into the tomb and tossing Jeremy out of harms way. Uh oh…
Elena’s Plan To Save Them All
Elena visits Rose to ask for her help in finding Klause, but Rose is not up for the challenge. After offering Rose an opportunity to become a daywalker, the two girls join forces to go talk to Slade, who they have no idea is dead until they reach his apartment. While trying to break into Slade’s computer, Rose comes across Slade’s human girlfriend Alice, who wanted to become a vampire and is distraught that the chance is now dead. Elena uses this piece of crazy to her advantage and promises Alice that Rose will sire her if she helps break Slade’s computer code. After Alice obliges, Rose notices a name, Cody, on the screen and has Alice contact the guy to find Klause. Elena then adds to tell the guy that she’s ready to surrender to Klause in exchange to spare her loved ones. What?!
Meanwhile, Jonas lays out the token items he stole from Elena’s room in front of Elijah and does a location spell on Elena.
When Elijah spots Elena’s location, he knows he has her trapped. Pissed that she was duped into a suicide mission, Rose contacts Damon who comes in the blink of an eye to knock some sense into Elena. The two almost share a kiss, but their union is interrupted by the appearance of Cody and two henchmen. As soon as these three arrive, Elijah shows up and ruins the party for everyone. He asks Cody if anyone, most importantly Klause, knows about this meeting and after Cody says no, Elijah ends the man’s life. Then leaves. What!?!? Plus, don’t let me forget that Rose hauled tail when Elijah burst through the door, whereabouts unknown.
Later, Elena and Damon deliberate on why Elijah left them unscathed, but draw blanks. At the Martins’ place, Elijah informs Jonas that the most important thing is for Elena to be safe. But from whom, people?
A New Bizarre Triangle
Matt apologizes profusely to Tyler for his actions at the masquerade ball, but Matt is still visibly disturbed. He later bumps into Caroline and we can still see sparks flying between those two.
Caroline asks Tyler if he’s truly prepared for the first full moon, which is on it’s way. They decide to see if Mason left anything behind in the old Lockwood Cellar in the woods and by golly the man left a journal behind chronicling his transformation into a werewolf. The journal also has a memory stick, which Tyler and Caroline decide to watch at her place. On the video, Mason goes through horrific pains which last about five hours and Tyler is officially freaked. Caroline reads the rest of the journal and tries to find the good out of the whole ordeal, forcing Tyler to query why does Caroline care due to them never being close. Caroline explains about her own transformation and how she ended up killing someone, which is something she doesn’t want on Tyler’s conscious. In other words, she doesn’t want him to go through this change alone. Aww.
The mood is broken when Matt shows up wanting to start over with Caroline. She’s happy as all get out, but Tyler appears behind her and despite giving Matt a friendly nod, the awkwardness is already in place. Uh Oh…
The Berating Time
After Bonnie berates him for his actions, Jeremy demands for Bonnie to wake up and see the chemistry between them, which he has already discovered. After an another near kiss between the two, Bonnie doesn’t cave and leaves. I’m stuck on the fence with this one…
Damon berates Elena for her reckless behavior of the day, which forces Elena to vent about everyone trying to protect her, yet she can’t do the same for them. She doesn’t get far in her argument due to Jeremy informing her and Damon on the trouble at the tomb.
Elena runs to the tomb for Stefan, but Damon stops her before she runs into the tomb. While Damon and Elena argue, Stefan and Katherine listen to the fracas, but neither comes to the door. Realizing she can’t beat Damon, Elena stumps off like a 9-year old brat. Damon then promises Stefan, who finally shows up, that he will try to get him out soon and keep Elena from the tomb no matter what happens. After Damon leaves, Katherine warns Stefan that he has just made the biggest mistake ever.
Say it with me folks: Uh. Oh…
From The Journals of The Council
This show doesn’t know how to stop inducing heart attacks and next week’s preview is no better. But that’s why we love this drug right?
Wonder what Elijah and Jonas have up their sleeves… Could Elijah be going rogue all of a sudden?
I was all for the Bonnie and Jeremy hook up, but now that my boy Luca’s in the picture, I’m more confused than a heroine in a teen supernatural novel. Is it wrong for me to want to see the two witches explore their magic further? It’s a Willow and Tara thing…
The sacrifice in question ended up being Stefan, but it seems like he will sacrifice more than freedom to make sure Elena is safe. Namely Elena herself.
Well guys stay tuned for Emma Frazer’s review! See you next week!
