TVOvermind Round Table: Jane the Virgin Season 1

Jane the Virgin

The latter half of Season 1 was filled with amazing guest stars. Are there any from this season who you think are important to bring back for Season 2?

Araceli Aviles: Rita Moreno almost certainly needs to come back. In addition to being funny and dynamic, she was the one guest star who got Rogelio and Xiomara to see some painful truths. Even if she wasn’t always right, she did her job as a mom and fairly voiced her concerns. I’d love to see her come back just to see her reaction to her son’s quickie marriage!

Laura Schinner: I would love to see Cheech Marin come back next season and have them explore his relationship with Alba more. And obviously, we’re going to have to see more of Sin Rostro, though they might have to recast her if she really did have her face changed again.

Andy Behbakht: To be honest, I can’t think of one that I want to come back more than any others, I think we had a very nice slate of guest stars, so I’m open to seeing any of them come back. However, I do really hope to see Bridget Regan return.

Chris King: I would love to see Rita Moreno return as Rogelio’s mother again, just because she was so much in the part and to see how the character would react to the fact that he and Xo are now married would be terrific. Aside from her, I’m always up for more Jane Seymour on my TV, and if we’re promised another fantastic fantasy dance sequence like we got this year, David Bisbal should also come back to perform again.

Finally, #TeamMichael or #TeamRafael, and why?

Araceli Aviles: Team Rafael all the way! Knowing someone isn’t the same thing as being right for them. If Jane had stayed with Michael, she never would have had the guts to reach for her dream of being a writer. Rafael was the one who really pushed her to follow her passion. By the same token, Jane balances out Rafael and brings him down to earth when he needs it. A good partner needs to be the person who not only knows you, but pushes you to be your best self, even when it’s scary. Plus, I’m a sucker for a good love story.

Laura Schinner: Throughout the show’s run, I’ve waffled back and forth between Team Michael and Team Rafael, with each man seeming best for Jane at different times. When it comes down to it, most viewers don’t care who Jane ends up with as long as she’s happy. With all the back and forth, it’s hard to say who is best for her right now, but I don’t doubt she’ll make the best decision. The show seems to realize that she has to make a choice, and I think we’ll see that happen early on in the second season.

Andy Behbakht: Oh I have gone back and forth with this, because at the start, I was all about Team Michael, then when the romance between Rafael and Jane came to life, I switched teams because of how enjoyable it was to see those two together. Then we had some [unnecessary] drama, and I saw the true value of Michael and why he is perfect for Jane at the end of the day. But honestly, the love story comes second to me because what I care most about is the story of this young extraordinary woman.

Chris King: More than anything, I’m #TeamJane, but if I have to choose between Michael and Rafael, then I’d have to go with Rafael. Michael’s somewhat shady and just plain rude behavior from the beginning of the season still bothers me, and while Rafael has demonstrated that he has some major faults, ones that he truly needs to work on, I just see more of a spark between him and Jane. Michael may know Jane better and may ultimately be the right guy for her, but there’s a sweetness, charm, and sincerity that I see in Jane and Rafael’s interactions that just never feels present when she’s with Michael. They challenge each other and, in many ways, bring out the best in each other. And plus, the chemistry between Gina Rodriguez and Justin Baldoni is truly something special.
