Watching Parks and Recreation was for the most part something that made you wonder about how things get done, not just in the parks and recreation arena either, but all over. Leslie had a lot on her plate when it came to getting even one thing done and a lot of the times it seemed like she was stymied at every turn. Her job wasn’t exactly the most enviable position in the world but it wasn’t the worst, and her coworkers and boss weren’t the greatest crew to work with but they’re what she had. Plus the show was so geared towards being funny that a lot of the bureaucratic mess just kind of faded into the background so that you could focus on the funny and leave it at that. It’s safe to say that this show helped and made careers while also giving people something fun to watch and giving them strange, but sage advice at times as some of the words were pretty easy to live by, while some of them were hard to understand at first.
Thankfully with comedy understanding isn’t always necessary. So with that said, here are some of the best quotes to live by from Parks and Recreation.
10. I don’t want to do things. I want to not do things.
Basically I don’t want to work, I want to not work. That’s completely understandable since some people would gladly zone out at their job for hours if they were allowed. Of course if you’re trying to get through to someone and they’re staring off into the distance in a catatonic state it’s kind of hard to get through to them without resorting to mild physical violence, like a pinch.
9. I also think it’s pointless for a human to paint scenes of nature when they can go outside and stand in it.
Really, what’s a picture worth when you have an entire landscape just outside your door, or at least within driving distance? It’s one thing if you live in a city and have no natural settings anywhere, then it might be reasonable. Otherwise, get outside and look around.
8. Guys love it when you can show them you’re better than they are at something they love.
Most guys will either stay mum on this or beg to differ largely because a woman being able to do whatever it is that they do is pretty cool to be honest. But being better at them, well, that’s kind of dependent on the guy really.
7. Sometimes you gotta work a little so you can ball a lot.
This really sounds like something a bureaucrat would say, at least one that doesn’t do much but look important.
6. The less I know about other people’s affairs, the happier I am. I’m not interested in caring about people. I once worked with a guy for three years and never learned his name. Best friend I ever had. We still never talk sometimes.
There are times when the best friend is the one that you don’t talk to all that much and rarely see but can still claim as a friend because they respect those boundaries that were never fully established.
5. I love games that turn people against each other.
And there are so many of them too. Games remind us that there is such a thing as competition and that humanity is capable of turning on each other without killing each other. Any game that sets one person against another, which means just about every game ever invented, is a testament to the fact that while humans can’t live with one another at all times we’re still capable of spurring each other on through shared love of a game or because we want to be in some way better than the next person.
4. Warning: high levels of swagger coming through.
When you’ve got it, flaunt it. But when you flaunt it, be ready for people to stare, ogle, and in some cases plot behind your back. Wait, did I say that out loud?
3. I hate talking to people about things.
Some folks just aren’t enamored of people, which is funny since in most jobs you have to interact with someone at some given time. Of course if you don’t like talking to people about things then you could just minimize the interaction and talk less.
2. Fishing relaxes me. It’s like yoga, except I still get to kill something.
For anyone wondering why fishermen, and women, are some of the happiest people on the planet when they’re on the water, disregarding their cursing and yelling when something goes wrong, it’s because there is eventually a payoff for all the waiting and, well, waiting.
1. What I hear when I’m being yelled at is people caring loudly at me.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with being continuously upbeat and positive, at least insofar as not accepting any hatred or bile that’s spewed in your direction.
Yes, it was a very funny show, with many words to live by.
