First Impressions of HBO’s “Insecure” Season 2 Premiere

The second season of HBO’s “Insecure” premiered on July 23, 2017 and the first episode hit the ground running. If you haven’t tuned in yet, you’re missing out. The comedy gives us a combination of lighthearted humor surrounding the struggles and victories of everyday life for two young L.A. women of African-American heritage. The plot centers around their friendship, their jobs and their love lives. The first season was amazing and from what we can see, the second season is moving ahead with great momentum. Our first impressions of season 2, from the premiere lead us to predict that the show will be a smashing success and here is why.

Women can relate to the characters

Issa Rae is not only a star in the series, but also the creator and executive producer. The comedienne is extraordinarily gifted as she delivers on humor and a mixture of conceit and self-consciousness in the character. Since she created her, she knows precisely what she wants to promote to viewers. “Insecure” is all about Black women who deal with their self-images while taking care of business and finding their way in life. It shows women of all colors how to find humor in situations that could affect them otherwise. Issa is good at taking a look at herself through the character and admiring herself while vocalizing any discontents in a hilarious monologue.

What did the premiere deliver?

Although viewership is not as high as it could be, those who were fortunate enough to have tuned in were left wanting more. Rae is remembered for “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl” and “Insecure” tackles the issues that young black females face with humor. Issa Dee doesn’t make a lot of money at her job, and her relationship with Lawrence, played by Jay Ellis is going okay, but it could be better. It’s a slice of reality.

Excellence in character development

Issa’s friend Molly is a good support for her, but Molly has her own struggles. She works for a law firm and is grossly underpaid for her work. She doesn’t have a romantic partner, but is managing to find happiness in other forms for now, or is at least trying with the help of a therapist. The premiere effectively moved the story of their lives forward and the development of the main characters was out of this world. The women are frank about the emptiness that they feel inside and discuss their feelings openly. Each looks forward to better days which they believe are coming. A recurrent thread that we see in this humorous look at reality is one of hope.

Final thoughts

Issa Rae has created a masterpiece in the series “Insecure,” and her contributions have been perfect for giving viewers a show that most women can relate to while being entertained. Every episode that has been aired so far delivers a message of hope for women who are not content with where they are at in life. It touches on friendship, work, self-image, relationships, hope for better days coming and does so in a way that makes us laugh hard at the insanity while realizing that life can be good and we never know what is waiting for us just around the corner.
