People are already anticipating the sequel to the hit remake of IT, and the movie is still showing in theaters having just surpassed “The Exorcist” as the highest grossing horror movie of all-time. It isn’t an easy thing to achieve, especially since the first IT movie was actually a great rendition of Stephen King’s novel as well. The novel itself is over 1,000 pages long, and as expected from movies, there were a lot of storylines from the book that didn’t make it into the movie.
As far as the movie itself is concerned, there were also a few frames and scenes that didn’t make it to the final cut. We’re sure that director Andrés Muschietti had his reasons for cutting out certain scenes because the end result is spectacular. The movie got the message across without having to add additional scenes that are more difficult to execute altogether. According to Jaeden Lieberher, the actor who plays Bill in the movie, there was an alternate ending involving his character that didn’t make it to the final cut.
In this alternate ending, we see Bill chase the illusion of his little brother Georgie down in the sewer much like the way the movie is cut now. We then see Bill climb the tower where he comes face-to-face with Pennywise as played by Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd. In this confrontation, Bill tells Pennywise that he is no longer afraid of him and neither are any of the members of the Losers Club. What we don’t see in the film now is Bill and Pennywise going at it in a big fight, where actor SkarsgÃ¥rd had to grab Lieberher to push him off a ledge. Lieberher had to wear a harness in order to shoot this scene because as it so happened, he was actually acting out the scene on a ledge. The conversation before the big fight between Pennywise and Bill was moved further towards the end, completely cutting out the difficult fight scene that was already filmed.
This was probably the best move for the film, especially to serve as a segue into a sequel. Although seeing Bill with Pennywise for a final time in that scene would’ve been a great way to defeat Pennywise, it doesn’t allow us to see the rest of the Losers Club. The movie is about teamwork and friends overcoming adversity, after all, so the best way to end it is just the way the movie ends now. There were other ‘more difficult’ scenes in the book that didn’t even make it in the story at all. We just have to trust that the director knows what he’s doing, especially with what we have seen in this new film. We can trust that the sequel will be just as good, and it’s definitely something scary to look forward to. In the meantime, we can enjoy this time of peace while Pennywise remains defeated because we know he’ll be back again soon to enact more terror.
