In summer 2019, ‘The Independent Photographer’ organized its monthly photo contest around the theme ‘Travel’. On this occasion, the renowned American photographer Steve McCurry was a judge in choosing the best photos.
Steve McCurry has been one of the most iconic voices in contemporary photography for over three decades and has created a unique collection of works featuring some of the most amazing photos of our time. McCurry’s work spans conflicts, vanishing cultures, ancient traditions, and contemporary culture alike – yet always retains the human element that made his stunning picture of the Afghan Girl so powerful.
After receiving and sorting travel photography shots from more than 60 different countries, this award aimed to discover interesting photos that communicate the life of a place in all its splendor, trigger our memories, and share the photographers’ journey, visually and intellectually.
Congratulations to the Winners & Finalists of this photography contest!
Let’s travel together!

#2 Claire Tan – 1st Prize
“What first caught my attention, and ultimately deemed this image as first place, is the poetic composition and interesting symmetry taking place. The harmonious color scheme, with the pop of red in the bucket, really works well for this photo. The movement of the image suggests that a gentle breeze was happening, and almost makes me feel like I was there when this photograph was made.” – Steve McCurry

In Cuba, people who live in the countryside and work the land are usually referred to as Guajiros. I spent a day with a guajiro family, which has been working the land for over 4 generations in the valley of Viñales, an area designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, traditional techniques are still in use for agricultural production, particularly of tobacco.

#6 German Rodriguez Laverde – 2nd Prize
“For me, this image is a close second place, it takes me back to times that I’ve photographed on water. The water seems to help create spontaneous moments to be captured. This whimsical instant within an interesting landscape particularly caught my attention.” – Steve McCurry

#7 Hilda Champion – 3rd Prize
“A perfectly balanced composition delicately guiding our eye from the man’s wooden canoe and red basket into the maze. The higher viewpoint gives a marvelous sense of the surroundings and peacefulness of the environment. The colors and man-made fishing cages appear as if a painter had long reflected on them and carefully drew each stroke. A beautiful scene making us feel that we too, are in China” – The Independent Photographer Editors
