It doesn’t happen as often as it used to back in the 70s and 80s but once in a while somehow a movie will slip through the cracks and get a PG rating. It’s almost as if someone from the ratings team was missing that day. Either that or they were not paying any attention at all to the subject matter of these films. The reality is that the MPAA introduced the PG-13 rating on July 1, 1984. Before that, there was no rating between PG and R, and some PG movies really pushed the boundaries of what was appropriate viewing for kids.
So you can guess what that meant. It effectively meant that there were standards for rating a movie R that must have been set pretty high and pretty gruesome and then essentially anything under that got the PG and below ratings. The movie Jaws was originally rated PG, think about that. Not only was there violence but nudity at the beginning of the film. Pretty crazy to think about.
In this video, watch some of the most shocking, horrifying, and traumatizing moments from PG (and even G) rated films.
