Mermaids are creatures of legends if you ask most people, beautiful men and women with the lower body of a fish and the upper body of a human. There are so many myths and legends that speak of these wondrous beings that listing them all would make this a very long article. But in movies they’ve usually taken on different characteristics that set them apart from one another. One thing they all have in common however is that taking them out of the sea is usually a very bad idea. For all their mystique and allure, they’re still largely misunderstood, mythical creatures that often fall prey to the representations they’re given by Hollywood.
Here are just a few to give you an idea.
5. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides-Syrena
The mermaids in this stinker of a film are insanely beautiful, but they’re also undeniably deadly. When they decide to lure men into the water they suddenly turn into sharp-toothed, insatiable creatures that despite their lovely countenance will gladly rip you apart as soon as look at you. In fact the mermaids in this film are better off being left alone altogether.
4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire-Mermaids
The mermaids in this film are pretty much all fish with a few humanoid characteristics. They’re about one of the ugliest representations ever shown, but in a Harry Potter film that seems par for the course when you’re talking about magical creatures. They also have a rather sour disposition towards those that come into their domain, no matter if it’s for a good reason.
3. Hook-Mermaids
The mermaids in the Peter Pan saga have almost always had a thing for the rascally boy that never wanted to grow up. He’s been seen as bad news and even as a bit childish but these lovely fish-tailed females seem to think he’s just fine. It might freak a few guys out to find themselves surrounded by brightly-colored women that are intent on kissing them, and blowing air into their mouths, but for other guys it would be a fantasy come true.
2. Splash-Madison
In many movies involving mermaids the finned females seem to be more curious than anything about humans, which is why those that can tend to find their way to solid ground to check things out. Madison however has been searching for the boy she fell in love with so long ago. While a great many people try to pull them apart, Madison and Allen finally escape and make their way to the sea.
1. The Little Mermaid-Ariel
Ariel dreams of life in the open air, away from the sea, and away from all she has known for her entire life. The problem is that as a mermaid she cannot go on land among the humans. The warnings of her father and of Sebastian, her father’s right-hand crab, fall on deaf ears however as she seeks out her prince and the life that she has always wanted.
Mermaids are a pleasing fantasy, and have even been the subject of scientific discovery in recent years. But for the moment they remain a myth and nothing more.
