The male chauvinist is a role that is amazingly still popular in Hollywood. It’s been one of the most dominant roles in show business for so long it might be a shock to the system if it was taken out. Unfortunately it also makes men make like some of the biggest jerks in the world. Male chauvinism is, simply put, the act of thinking that women are in some way inferior to men. Many roles in Hollywood have cast men in this light and whether they deserve it or not, the act needs to find its way to the door eventually. At least in comedy the role is actually kind of hilarious simply because it makes fun of such an outdated attitude.
Here are some of the biggest, most chauvinistic jerks in all of film.
5. Nick Marshall-What Women Want
Nick is a firm believer that he’s God’s gift to women. When he was created it was obviously to give women a wondrous, handsome, and debonair individual to gawk at as he took his pick from the lot of them. Once he gets a good enough jolt of electricity through his system a funny thing happens. He finds out that he can hear women’s thoughts, and most of them aren’t as complimentary as he thought. Needless to say he eventually changes his ways.
4. Ron Burgundy-Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy
Some guys just don’t learn. Ron Burgundy is not just a male chauvinist, he’s a moron. I will call it exactly like I see while admitting that there were some genuinely funny moments in this movie. The chauvinistic attitude of Ron Burgundy however knew almost no bound and didn’t change once the sequel was made. It stands to reason that if chauvinism is this ingrained in your character that the writers won’t see fit to change it anytime soon.
3. Ian Hawke-Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel
He’s not so blatant about it but his chauvinism is still fairly obvious. He’s a user through and through, and in terms of dealing with women if he’s not on top he will still act that way. It’s pretty fair to say that all human beings, and chipmunks, not just women, are expendable and considered somehow lesser to Ian, but he really seems to hammer down on the ladies.
2. Stan Gable-Revenge of the Nerds
Ever notice how the women in Revenge of the Nerds are just window dressing to the Alphas? They’re there just to amuse the guys and help them out when, and if, they’re needed. Stan is the worst of them all since he isn’t shy about telling Betty what he wants and then dismissing her when he’s not feeling it. The world is there to please Stan, and everything else is just secondary. Did anyone else cheer when she went to the Nerd Side?
1. Franklin Hart Jr.-9 to 5
This is chauvinism at its worst, or best, or, something. In any case it’s chauvinism that knows no bounds as the women in this film are treated like dirt, believed to be peons that are there to cater to the men, and are basically expected to do everything while the men take the credit and reap the rewards. A lot of people would argue that this is still going on, and in some cases it might be.
Male chauvinism is a little more acceptable in comedy largely because we’re all allowed to make fun of the guy that thinks he’s that important. It’s also great because that same guy usually gets a massive load of payback one way or another.
