It’s amazing to think that Hugh Jackman has been playing the character of Wolverine for about 17 years now. The actor has truly brought the character’s skills to life, maybe even including the fact that he doesn’t seem to age. We know he does, and upon closer look, we’ve seen him transform from the very first time he played the character to his most recent Wolverine movie. He never fails to impress us each time, and now that he’s officially said his farewell to playing the clawed mutant, we can finally pick our favorites. Here are the top 5 Hugh Jackman Wolverine performances ever.
1. Logan (2017)
Logan really gave us a good movie to say farewell to one of our favorite comic book characters that have ever crossed over to film. This is Jackman’s best performance to date. The action is brutal; the story is captivating, sad, and completely fitting. There’s no better way to end the story of Wolverine than by continuing his legacy. This movie solidifies Jackman as the one and only Wolverine. We’re not entirely sure if anyone could ever replace Jackman with the role.
2. X2: X-Men United (2003)

The second installment of the X-Men franchise gave Wolverine an opportunity to shine. The movie focused on Wolverine’s tragic past, providing us with a great and familiar storyline. But Jackman took the role to another level, with crazy action scenes that made him look like a legitimate badass. The movie also expanded the Wolverine role as protector of the younger mutant generation, solidifying future possibilities of more installments.
3. X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
The story of this particular movie is incredible to begin with, and the role that Wolverine plays in the movie is just crucial. It’s also nice to see the role reversals between him and Professor Xavier and also to see him interact with a completely new set of X-Men characters. Jackman’s expertise with his character is absolutely impressive in this movie, and seeing him play a version of both Wolverine’s old self and young self in one movie is something only Jackman can pull off.
4. X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
While this may not be our favorite X-Men movie at all, Jackman’s performance in the film is still worth mentioning. There’s a lot going on in the movie that feels rushed in a sense, but Wolverine manages to make us believe in his emotions and intentions nevertheless. As cheesy as it may be, the part where Wolverine has to be the one to kill Dark Phoenix is kind of one his best moments to date.
5. X-Men (2000)
This is the movie that started it all. So many years ago, a relatively semi-famous actor took on the role of Wolverine, and nothing has been the same in the genre since. In this movie, Jackman gave us the performance that catapulted his career into overdrive. He made us believe in the power, the humanity, the emotion, the history, the friend, the fighter, the mutant, and everything else that we’ve always known Wolverine to be. We didn’t think then that it was ever possible for one actor to play the same role for 17 years. Now we are wiser, and we know better. We also know that it probably won’t happen ever again in the history of the genre. Jackman as Wolverine was the oddity that we were lucky enough to witness.
