Our Top Five Favorite Fictional Surfer Characters in Movies

In the movies surfers are some of the most chill people you could ever hope to meet. They have an outlook on life that’s more mellow than anyone and at times you think they could teach even the most benevolent person in the world a lesson in patience and just being chill. But some of the surfers in movies have a bit of a dark side, while others seem uninterested in doing much more than riding the waves and figuring out ways to just cruise on through life. That’s cool and all, but unfortunately that’s about all it lets them do is cruise. When you’re outlook seems to be that life just happens though and it’s okay to just roll with it, then really the need to stress about anything just kind of goes away.

The blissful mentality of a surfer is captured effortlessly in many films. Here are just a few.

5. Big Z (Jeff Bridges voice) – Surf’s Up

Big Z was a top level surfer that just wanted the perfect wave and to have fun doing what he was doing. When he discovered that his notoriety was taking him down a road he didn’t want to travel he engineered his own demise and was then never seen again. It was presumed he perished in the Boneyard, but in truth he lived as a hermit in the woods away from the beach, depending on Lani to bring him clams from time to time. He got to live in peace the way he wanted, but he couldn’t make his way to the shore for fear of being seen.

4. Turtle – North Shore

Nobody listens to Turtle. It’s too bad too because he has some good advice. Like not surfing too close to the reef, that’s great advice worth a penny or two. Turtle is a guy that knows what he’s doing but isn’t often listened to for some reason. The same guy that plays Turtle actually showed up on another surfing movie that’s featured on this list.

3. Silver Surfer -The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

So he’s not technically surfing the waves, and he’s not technically even human. So? His character is still awesome due to his power set and the fact that he does in fact surf the vast  cosmos looking for new planets for his boss to munch on. Unfortunately the surfer is not all that mellow. He’s kind of uptight and for good reason, there’s a lot of blood on his hands so to speak, as he’s the guy that scouts out the new planets for Galactus to consume. He’s probably one of the least mellow surfers to ever ride a board really.

2. Skip Engblom – Lords of Dogtown

Ah Skip, good old Skip. Just wanted to make a living, just wanted to surf, and he just wanted to see his team do well. Once they started getting famous though it wasn’t much of  a surprise that they started skipping out on him, no pun intended. Fame and notoriety makes people do strange things and old alliances that once seemed so strong can break like matchsticks when money starts weighing in. Skip just didn’t have the kind of ambition the guys did, he just wanted to hang out and have good time.

1. Bodhi – Point Break

Bodhi is like the epitome of cool. Now if only he wasn’t a bank robber he might be the most complete character on this list. But he had that pesky need to fund his lifestyle that kept him on the wrong side of the law and firmly in Johnny Utah’s crosshairs. At least for a while the friendship seemed cool, until things started getting real and Utah had to make that crucial decision between job and friends.

Surfers in movies are just cool, they’re the guys you want to hang out with most times and the ones that just don’t stress about much.
