Mark Hamill is best known for his role as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars Episodes IV, V, VI, The Force Awakens, and the upcoming The Last Jedi. However, it is important to note that he has had a long, wide-ranging career with appearances in movies, TV shows, theater productions, and other mediums. As a result, it should come as no surprise to learn that some of his other roles have been well-known in their own right.
Here are our picks for the top 5 Mark Hamill roles outside of Star Wars:
The Joker
In 1992, the people behind Batman: The Animated Series chose Hamill as a replacement for Tim Curry in voicing one of the franchise’s most iconic villains, the Joker. This sent him into a panic at the time because the Joker was so high-profile that he was concerned about not being able to live up to expectations. However, Hamill’s time as the Joker was so successful that he went on to voice the character in numerous movies, TV shows, video games, and other spin-offs. Furthermore, it is interesting to note that this success provided Hamill with something of a reputation for voicing villainous characters, thus leading to one of the other roles included on this list.
The Trickster
It is interesting to note that Hamill is associated with another villain from the DC comic books. In brief, he played the Trickster in the 1990 TV show The Flash before reprising the role in the 2014 TV show The Flash. Although the character is not as well-known as the Joker, Hamill’s acting has had such a strong influence over its existence that it is now most associated with him rather than other depictions.
Fire Lord Ozai
The Fire Lord Ozai from Avatar: The Last Airbender is a much more recent example of Hamill’s penchant for voicing villainous characters. Furthermore, it is an interesting show of the man’s range, seeing as how the Joker tends to be a madman with a warped sense of humor whereas Fire Lord Ozai tends to be a brutal conqueror who planned to cow his enemies by burning entire swathes of a restive continent. While the character was far from being the sole villain on Avatar, he was one of two to have a pivotal role in the finale, thus cementing his status as a central figure in the animated TV show.
Hart
For a time, Hamill acted in theater productions on Broadway, which were meant to further distance himself from his role as Luke Skywalker. Examples ranged from The Elephant Man in 1979 to The Nerd in 1987 and 1988. However, his best Broadway role might have been Hart in Harrigan ‘N Hart in 1985, for which he earned a nomination for the Drama Desk Award.
Colonel Christopher Blair
Luke Skywalker isn’t the only time that Hamill has played the protagonist in a science fiction franchise, as shown by his role as Colonel Christopher Blair in Wing Commander, which was a franchise of space combat simulation video games that was popular in the 1990s. To be precise, he played the character in the full motion video cut scenes in addition to making other appearances here and there throughout the franchise.
