A film set is hazardous at the best of times, with dangerous stunts happening and lots of people rushing around an area that has been hastily built, there can always be chaos. These aren’t just the only factors though, you must remember to potentially add in crazy directors, extreme weather conditions, aggressive animals and having to pull a 320-ton steamship over a mountain. At least this is what Dreamstime found in their research on the ‘The Most Insane Film Sets of All Time’.
Many of the films of this list have been well documented in recent times for the struggles. The Abyss for instance, a science fiction film about a search and recovery team who encounter an alien deep underwater, had the crew working underwater at depths of 50 feet for long periods at a time, leading them to need a decompression chamber to avoid getting sick.
One story from the set involved director James Cameron almost drowning when his tank ran out of oxygen 35 deep in water with no fins and weighted down by 80-lb. As he tried to escape to the surface one of the safety divers pushed a back-up regulator into his mouth, which was meant to give lifesaving oxygen, unfortunately it was broken, so Cameron only inhaled water, the safety diver then took Cameron’s subsequent fighting as simply normal panic so tried to hold him tighter, Cameron had to punch him in the face before he could make it to the surface and to oxygen.
Other film shoots had to contend with animal bites, bow and arrow attacks, floods, spiked clam chowder and human corpses being used as props.
