These Dinosaur-Mushroom Toys Have Traveled More Than Most People

We are Aiman and Hwa, Los Angeles based designers and creators of Fungisaurs. What are Fungisaurs? Dinosaur-mushroom hybrids, of course!

We share a passion for travel, cute collectible toys, quirky mushrooms, and dinosaurs. We’re both also artists, so it was only a matter of time till we designed and created an original toy line combining our interests.

The idea of Fungisaurs was born on our way back from Yosemite National Park as we were perusing a mushroom identification handbook and were given dinosaur stickers at In-N-Out Burger, truly the birthplace of all great ideas, as we’d like to call it :) We furiously started sketching the new dinosaur-mushroom hybrid species and prototyped them on a 3D printer upon our return home.

We figured Fungisaurs start their life cycle like mushrooms, as spores, so, naturally, they’d travel on the winds and end up everywhere! Since 2015, we’ve literally taken our Fungisaurs toys with us on all of our journeys, from remote national parks to bustling cities, all over the world.

We like to photograph the toys as if they are the ones traveling. There were many occasions when we were photographing the Fungisaurs that hikers came over to take a closer look and play with them. There was even an incident, in Tokyo, a large group of tourists gathered round Chick-Rap, one of the Fungisaurs characters, and had a kawaii photo session!

We want to share Fungisaurs with everyone, so we worked really hard and started a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to mass produce Fungisaurs toys and began development on an AR (augmented reality) mobile game, so people could interact with the characters.
