What We Learned from The Walking Dead at Paleyfest

To all the Walking Dead fans out there.  Did you know that the series is approaching 100 episodes and that season 8 would mark episode 100?  Showrunner Scott Gimple recent said that the show is not planning on cancelling the series anytime soon despite a few bumps in the ratings road this year.   The entire cast and supportive made a huge panel appearance last night at Paleyfest where they answered a number of burning questions that fans and the media wanted answers to.   The biggest quote of the night came from Gimple who said,

“Episode 801, the first episode of Season 8, is gonna be the 100th episode. The first episode is less about that we reached 100 episodes, it’s more about setting up the next 100 episodes,” he revealed during a panel at Los Angeles’ annual PaleyFest television festival on Friday night. “The end of this season is very much the end of a chapter; it’s a conclusion that promises this epic story ahead. It’s about setting up this gigantic, epic tale to come, not only in Season 8, but beyond.”

Obviously that quote is extremely telling.  How in the world can The Walking Dead have another 100 episodes?  We’re talking 14 seasons of The Walking Dead?  Is that even possible?  If so, how? Before we even go there, we still need to answer season 7 questions.  Earlier in the week we already heard that Jeffrey Dean Morgan will be back for season 8, so obviously Negan will still be around.

If fans are still scarred from the season 7 premiere, if it makes you feel any better, so is the crew.  Gimple admitted that the cast and crew felt your pain.

“The first episode was a trifle traumatic, for you guys and for everybody here,” he noted, explaining that the point of the angsty first half of the season was “to get from that point to a point where these characters can smile again.”

So what else did we learn from the cast and producers at Paleyfest?  These are just highlights but you can read the actual quotes at Mashable:

  • Eugene (or should we say “Negan”) is just trying to survive
  • There could be hope for Dwight.
  • What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger–especially when you’re Maggie.
  • Sasha is pretty tough too.
  • Melissa McBride doesn’t see Carol as a badass (and that makes her even more badass).
  • Andrew Lincoln thinks Michonne is the key to Rick’s new sense of purpose.
