Last night’s results show of The Voice proved that at this stage in the competition, no one really is safe. In a night full of performances from alumni of the show, we said goodbye to a contestant who I thought had a shot at winning it all. For the rest of the contestants, this should be a warning that even the slightest slip-up could send them home. They have to be smart about song choices and come out giving their all not only vocally, but performance-wise as well. Showing an emotional connection to the song is also important for those remaining, as it might have been this final criteria that sent Kimberly Nichole home this week.
Before the results were revealed, we heard from a handful of past The Voice contestants, who took the stage and showed America what they’ve been working on since their time on the show ended. No performance was all that impressive, but for people who have watched the show since the start, it’s nice to see what various contestants have been up to. Plus, this is a great platform for the artists to promote themselves, as they’re performing to an audience that is already made up of fans of theirs.
To fill time, we also heard from the cast of Entourage, promoting their new movie, which features a cameo from Pharrell. Apparently, they’re big fans of the show, though they weren’t too convincing in their enthusiasm. Carson filled the rest of the time, asking generic questions to the contestants about what they’ve learned on the show, and he was greeted with generic responses.
When it finally came down to the results, the bottom two were announced and given the chance to sing for their lives, with America instantly saving one of them. It was Team Christina’s turn to be in danger, as both India Carney and Kimberly Nichole had the least number of votes. From past weeks, it’s clear that Kimberly has shined more in the competition. She’s wowed us with entertaining performances and powerful vocals, and in her final song, she did just that. Kimberly would have benefited from a different song choice last night, one that allowed her to connect more with the audience, and this mistake cost her.
At the same time though, India’s last ditch effort to save herself was full of pitch problems. Despite how popular she was at the start of the competition, she hasn’t been able to keep up that momentum and has constantly found herself in danger of elimination. Between Kimberly’s stellar performances and India’s waning popularity, I was shocked that it was India who America chose to instantly save last night. It was another close vote, leaving me questioning how accurate The Voice‘s system of collecting votes really is.
Sending Kimberly home over India doesn’t make much sense to me, but then again, crazier things have happened in singing competitions. While India attempts to make the most of her third life next week, the competition will be a little bleaker without the enthusiasm and light that Kimberly has brought to the show. Everyone else needs to be careful, because next week, it just might be them going home unexpectedly.
