Thankfully, The Vampire Diaries is showing signs of improvement after a couple of disappointing weeks. Necessary steps were finally taken to further Bonnie’s journey back home just when she needed the inspiration the most.
It was actually a pretty depressing birthday for our favorite time-traveling witch. Even in the present day, it was weird to see Elena and Caroline decorating for their best friend’s birthday while she’s still stuck in an alternate dimension. That led Caroline and Elena on their own different paths in dealing with the situation.
Elena’s approach is more direct as she, Damon, and Jeremy get help from Kai in attempting to get a message through to Bonnie. The Gemini merge last week really softened Kai up, which explains how he got roped into doing something nice for a change. Let’s call it the Luke side in him since it’s strangely obvious that Kai isn’t completely the evil serial killer he once was.
Apparently Damon had an idea when he was stuck in that prison that if only they could get to Nova Scotia, Bonnie could use the powerful magic left in Qestiyah’s blood on Silas’ headstone. Quite a throwback to Season 4 in mentioning the original doppelgangers, but hey, it’s a loophole I never would have seen coming otherwise. My only question is why didn’t Damon mention this idea to Bonnie when he was still there, rather than scribble down some notes on a map.
Bonnie got the message in the end but only after things got very, very dark. Damon recognized the bottle of bourbon she was drinking as a part of the suicide pact they made together if they couldn’t handle the literal hell they were stuck in. Bonnie really broke my heart as she recorded her final goodbyes for her friends. She didn’t know Jeremy was there in spirit, and thank goodness he was able to help save her at the very last minute. The important thing is though that she saved herself in realizing that she didn’t want to die. Grams’ words of advice to stay strong took on a whole new meaning when she was choking on car fumes. It all worked out in the end when she found the map with Damon’s directions to Nova Scotia so fingers crossed it’s only a matter of time before she makes it back home to all her friends.
Steven McQueen’s last episode as a series regular airs next week, and now we have an answer as to how Jeremy is being written off. He’s going to art school! I’m not entirely sure he’s even close to graduating high school but anything is better than another death that wouldn’t last. Seriously though, it feels right that he’s leaving. He hasn’t been of much use to anyone since he was brought back from the dead.
Now if only there could be a convenient way to write Tyler and Liv off too. In Liv’s defense, she did just lose her brother and best friend, Luke. That’s natural to grieve and be angry and whatever. She even attempts to kill Kai knowing full well that she and her entire coven would die with him. What really upset Tyler, though, was that very fact that she was ready to die herself just to bring down the brother responsible for Luke’s death. This all seems so one-dimensional. I mean, does anyone actively care about Tyler, Liv, or their relationship? Just send them somewhere else to live their lives as peaceful as possible. They’re not needed here anymore.
Unfortunately, the same can be said for Enzo. He’s got his eye on Sarah Salvatore with the intention of insinuating himself into her life to prove a point to Stefan. Or maybe it’s to get revenge on Stefan for not telling Damon about Sarah’s existence, but does Damon really care? We don’t see him calling his best buddy Enzo to see what he’s up to lately. If anything, the most interesting part of Enzo’s storyline was his threat to Matt’s mom. Could this mean Melinda Clarke might return as Mrs. Donovan? She’s never been an ideal parental figure on the show considering her extended absence from her son’s life but maybe there’s a story to tell if she were to come back
Damon and Elena are officially back together in case you skipped the last episode. Elena’s whole spiel about not living in the past and blah blah blah was basically a rewording of what she already said last week. The only difference is they slept together this time. I guess Delena fans are happy, but they’re boring me already. I miss the sparks. What other obstacle can come between them now?
At least we still have Stefan and Caroline’s budding romance to keep us entertained. They are completely adorable. Caroline has a lot on her plate with her mom’s health being her number one priority but it takes Stefan to really lighten her up a bit. They should dig for Ms. Cuddles all the time just so they can end up lying next to each other.
Overall, it felt like some progress was made in terms of Bonnie’s arc. I like where that’s headed. She’ll be all the more powerful for saving herself. As for everyone else, I’m still waiting to be completely wowed by an unexpected plot twist like the good old days.
