In the 70s brothers were just about as complicated as they were in any decade. In movies they could be best friends or they could just barely tolerate one another. Whatever happened though one thing is for certain, brothers were always looked upon a kind of aggressive and the type that would leap before they looked. In fact it’s kind of the same way in today’s movies since boys and men don’t often look before doing something or think about their actions before they get right into it. When it comes to brothers in the movies they kind of just go on impulse as they did in the 70s no matter what the result is going to be. But then again in every decade brothers have been looking out for one another left and right so it can’t be all bad. It’s just when they don’t look out at all before acting that it gets kind of awkward.
Here are some films that show some of the best brothers in film in the 70s.
5. Animal House
Okay so frat brothers is kind of stretching the definition a bit, but it’s something that a lot of people understand since it is a brotherhood that many men tend to value. But with brothers like these it seems that you might want to think about belonging to a different family upon graduation, one that doesn’t get you into as much trouble as the Delta’s are capable. Granted it was probably a fun ride throughout the movie and it was something that many people would look back on and laugh about, but the brotherhood that’s exhibited in this film is one that would be well avoided by many people.
4. Star Wars
Yes, obviously Luke and Leia didn’t know about each other in this movie but once they did it was a very big revelation that had a lot of bearing on the story and could explain how they became so close so fast. Luke wasn’t exactly the most heroic brother that anyone could hope for from the start but he was at least ready and willing to go and do something when people were in trouble. That kind of brother is someone you can depend on to do the right thing at least even if he wasn’t entirely skilled at most things. But hey, he was a moisture farmer from Tattooine before he became a rebel, so the bar was set pretty low to begin with.
3. Slap Shot
The Hanson brothers were noted as being some the toughest guys in the game and as such were used as enforcers in the movie, the guys that are just out there to punish the other team and take a beating if they have to do in order to do their job. It doesn’t mean they played it cool or even easy, they were out there to do some serious damage and make sure that people knew who they were. In the game of hockey enforcers have been seen as some of the roughest and most aggressive people of all and there have been times when even the crowd can’t really understand why they’re so mean.
2. The Godfather
Out of all the brothers Michael is the scariest of them by far. Fredo is the weakest since he dimes out his brother for little more than the hope that there would be something in it for him, while Tom is an adopted brother but still isn’t about to be claimed as an Italian. In fact it’s safe to say that Michael only ever sees him as an adopted family member and not someone of true blood that deserves the same regard. Sonny on the other hand is just a wild animal that’s ruled by emotion and doesn’t think past what he’s going to do at that given moment. So among all of them, Michael is really the only one that could have ever taken the mantle of Godfather.
1. The Jerk
There are some brothers you can’t help but love and yet still can’t figure out why. Navin grew up not knowing he wasn’t black, somehow, and decided to go and make his future where he could find his rhythm. When he got out in the big wide world he found out it was a lot harder than he’d realized and went through a few different professions, even getting rich, before he ended up in the gutter. He does prove to be a dutiful son and sends money home while he’s got it, but by the time the film is ready to end he has nothing but the filthy clothes on his back and the few possessions he took with him. Thankfully his family invested the money he sent and became rich.
Brothers are kind of kooky whatever decade you’re in.
