Wait just a second as I catch my breath after seeing tonight’s Teen Wolf.
Holy. Crap!!!
The Alpha stepped his game up tonight, letting Scott know that he is not playing and is ready to recruit our hero or kill him if necessary. Also, Jackson got weirder, the Argents are werewolf slayers, and Stiles makes for a way better Yoda than Derek any day of the week. The parking garage lesson was way more dangerous than Scott being hit with balls and fists, and for less effective. I’ll get more into that later, but let’s start with the ancillary storylines first.
The Argents are the (Werewolf) Slayers of Teen Wolf
I called this from gate. The Argents are a bloodline of werewolf hunters and they take their jobs hella seriously given their history. Allison got her first clue in finding out what’s up with her family’s past, but will she accept or reject her family’s birthright once the truth hits the fan? If it was up to Aunt Kate, Allison would be midway through training at this point. Even though Mr. Argent wasn’t on tonight’s episode, I have a feeling that he probably wants Allison to know little about what he and Kate does as possible, but Kate might have a different opinion on that subject. She’s more gung-ho about their job, while Argent is more subdued and practical to an extent to the cause. The drama won’t just be between Allison and Scott when all is revealed, but maybe between the Argent family as well.
Is Jackson a Puppet For The Werewolves?
The man simply went to a place tonight that had me raise up out of my bed to see exactly what the hell was going on. What was
with the stench of death on him? The werewolf claw coming out of his mouth? The sudden interest and talk with Allison? Could Jackson be a wolf as well from Derek’s scratch? Or is he marked to do Derek’s bidding from afar? A human familiar if you will? One thing for sure, he can’t be the Alpha after the events of tonight. Plus, Lydia was still traumatized by the werewolf sighting, but why was she hiding it? Could she be hiding some other mental issues brought on by her parents divorce and self medication, which she thinks the wolf sighting was a result from?
Desperate Werewolves
Derek showed a rare sign of weakness when he visited his uncle in the nursing home asking for help. From this visit, we learned the Alpha is alone and doesn’t have a pack yet, which makes him a weaker opponent to some extent. We also have the possibility that the Alpha is another survivor from the cabin fire that injured Derek’s uncle and killed a lot of their brethren. This brings me to my next questions of 1) did the Alpha belong to the Hale pack of wolves and 2) if so, why attack and kill one of his brethren (Laura Hale)?
The build-up of questions correlates with Derek’s pressing time to make moves before he himself gets got. It makes sense to have Scott on his side, but the reason why (other than extra muscle) is still kind of murky at this point.
The Yoda Effect
So Stiles was pissed that his father was injured during the fracas at the end of last week’s episode, but I personally do not think it had anything to do with Scott’s dilemma. However, the werewolf business has put a dent in both of their social lives, so I could see his aggravation on the entire subject coming to a head with that incident.
Despite that setback, Stiles still had his boy’s back and helped Scott realize something that we as an audience already figured out, which is that Allison is his anchor from wolfing out. Be that as it may, this is a catch-22, which puts both teens in danger if they are attacked by the Alpha, because Scott won’t be the killing machine he needs to be if she’s near. Derek’s stance on how Scott should manage his powers seem to come off a bit reckless, which is where I feel his desperation tends to show, because he’s making irrational decisions that could get Scott killed when the time comes.
On the other hand, you have Stiles who wants to help preserve and maintain Scott’s humanity. Scott was bitten, forced into what he’s become at this point in time. Derek was born a werewolf, so all he’s known is that wild nature, a code he lives by everyday of his existence. I feel that Derek and Stiles need to sit down and have a talk, with Scott of course, to figure out a way to help their friend and ally balance his life more effectively. To me, that’s the only thing that will save Scott in the end.
It’s All in the Heart, Baby
So we were rewarded by using our critical thinking skills and deduced that Scott’s control in his shifting comes from his anger, while Allison is his human tranquilizer of sorts. Now, Allison won’t be there to hold his hand everytime someone pisses him off, so while it is a nice little twist in the scheme of things, he’s going to need to find something more concrete and reliable to help stave off his anger. Also, what happens if Allison ever makes him mad? Now, that’s a scary thought to think about…
Will the Real Alpha Please Stand Up?
So the suspects have been placed on the playing board and it’s only a matter of time before we find out who exactly the Alpha is.
When the show ended, Scott’s boss was nowhere to be found when the Alpha attacked and ‘injured’ Derek (if that guy is dead, I would applaud the writers for such a bold ass move). Now, this all went down after Scott made a call out to his ‘maker’ through the school intercom, which means that it’s the perfect place for Mr. Harris to be getting some late night work done. Then there is the incident earlier that day in school where Mr. Harris seemed ‘creepy’ again after the heart to heart between Scott and Stiles. Where Scott’s boss is concerned, the piling evidence that he’s hiding something has become full on truth. So again, could the Alpha be Scott’s boss or Mr. Harris?
Random Thoughts
– Scott’s realization that he loved Allison was nicely played out. A small, but effective, incident that pretty much changes everything with that particular element of Teen Wolf, which will only make the Scott/Allison relationship even more complicated in the future. I know I’ve said that over and over, but you have to admit that this is headed to all kinds of tragedy that Sweet Valley High would even be proud of.
– We know what the spiral symbol means now and it makes perfect sense. Now, Derek burying his sister with the wolfsbane coiled around her grave in a spiral doesn’t make sense… to extent.
– Scott was completely in control when he stopped Derek from beating the crap out of his boss. Total bad ass moment, if you ask me.
– The sound system scene was just crazy awesome. Scott went from Gizmo to Godzilla and meant business. Seriously, the guys is becoming a true bad ass, people.
– Is it just me or is Kate getting more annoying by each appearance? I liked her at first, but damn she needs to give Allison some space.
– The talk between Stiles and Scott was well written and firmly established that these two have been through a lot together and will go through a hell of a lot more. I also saw a bit of maturing between the two of them given their current situation. Again, it’s the littlest of things.
– That trailer for next week? Epical awesomeness. Can. Not. Wait.

If Derek is dead, I'll be very upset! There's way too many loose ends with his character left. I mean he didn't even find out about this sister and then the whole thing with his uncle moving. Plus, I'll be really sad if Tyler Hotness is gone. NO!!:( Besides, this wasn't even a special episode where "someone will die" or whatever. Also, you can't compare this to Game of Thrones at all. Ned Stark died in the book, so it wasn't a total shocker. People were just surprised they offed a character played by Sean Bean.
Great recap Mark! I also would be extremely impressed if they actually killed off Derek. IMO it would elevate this show to TVD levels! I never really thought I would like real shockers like that until TVD did it. Knowing a show will "go there" just brings us to a whole 'nother level of investment in the show. However, I doubt very seriously that's what will happen. In the case of TVD, they had a ton of other characters that hadn't been fully developed that they then did develop when something like, oh say, killing Vickie happened! Hell, the first season of TVD hardly had Matt & Caroline involved in any plot points whatsoever, other than in the periphery – BUT they WERE there in the periphery, and they WERE used to forshadow events to come (like filming Tyler under a full moon or under a picture of the school's wolf mascot). Teen Wolf, if they DID go there would, at this point, would have to bring in entirely new characters in order to continue developing the storyline and answer questions posed by Dereks character in the first place. So I don't see that happening – unfortunately. Not to mention, Derek's the hottest eye-candy the show's got! LOL
That being said, I love Teen Wolf and think it has all the potential in the world to be an excellent "teen-angst" drama! I'd just like to see it develop into one a little more quickly. We just finished episode 6 and still don't know who the Alpha is or why he's doing the things he's doing. They're doing a great job at character development, no doubt! We're invested in these characters, we care what's going to happen between Scott & Allison, how Allison is going to deal with her family's "purpose", the rock-solid bond of friendship between Scott & Stiles, etc. But where it excels at character development, it fails in plot development. To keep us guessing at the identity of the Alpha is fine, but keeping us guessing for 6 weeks when our options are basically limited to 2 minor characters (the teacher and the vet) gets a bit boring after a while.
So, IMO, the show has major potential and I'm hooked enough to see how it plays out, but I'm ready to see a bit more of that potential realized a little quicker.

Tv guide had an article couple of weeks back where they asked Crystal Reed if the producers or writers had warned the cast that not everyone would survive the season…her answer "no, they did not [laughs] We have one character who ends up dying and that person didn't find out until they had read the script"…so I have been expecting someone to die and wasn't all that surprised when Derek died last night. However…I think it is a horrible move on the writers part if he stays dead. Like M said there are too many loose ends with his character…some things that only he and audience know that I'm afraid that if he really is a goner that we'll never know the answers to and to me that would be sloppy writing.
Why was Laura really seeking out the Alpha? How did the guy from the bus know Derek? Did someone survive the fire besides his Uncle? Who placed the picture of the deer on his car…and how did that person know that Derek was looking for the Alpha?
I was also wondering exactly what is required for one to become an alpha…and if Derek is the last of his pack why is he still a Beta…or is he? With him being a werewolf and being able to heal…they did make a point of saying that they can't stop from healing when unconscious perhaps he will survive…if there is any reason that he might not it's because usually my favorite character gets killed off in these things and he's my favorite.
As for some of the other stuff….Jackson saying he was willing to do anything to get back his mojo so to speak makes me think that he would be willing to become a werewolf himself just to even up the playing field between him and Scott which may be where all that's leading. I was wondering if a claw mark such as Derek gave him might be slowly changing him whereas the bite quickly changed Scott. Of perhaps it's as some of us were saying last week…being adopted he might be a member of the Hale family and he's beginning to change because he's been awakened by the claw marks.
While I definitely do see Derek's desperation in this episode I don't see the moment with Scott at the vets as a bad ass moment…at least not for me. I find it kind of weak that the reluctant werewolf who doesn't want to be one and wants to be rid of it or control it is all of a sudden going to come off bad ass. It felt totally out of character…I could see Scott attempting it but with Derek coming right back in his face(after all he's been one his whole life) and then coming to a compromise…much like when they had the fight at Derek's house. The scene just didn't work for me but honestly when I was watching it…it felt like they had left out a lot due to editing so who knows what might have been cut.
As for the stuff with Allison calming Scott down…I was thinking more along the lines of how angry would he become if she was in danger than what if he got mad at her.
Scott's first howl and Derek's response was hilarious. Funniest part of the night imo.
Maybe it's just me but I find the Allison/Scott romance to be the weakest part of the show…My attention perks up when Derek, Stiles, Jackson, or Lydia are on the screen…all these characters seem to outshine the main two characters in some way imo. I guess from my viewpoint Allison and Scott have more normal personalities… whereas the rest seem to have a uniqueness that stands out. Nevertheless thus far I've enjoyed all the episodes.
Looking forward to the next episode…hoping Derek survives for the sake of the storyline and so many unanswered questions.
Looks like Derek lives (hopefully it's not flashbacks)…Tyler Hoechlin is listed for 11 episodes out of 12 for season one (imdb)….Maybe they'll leave him out of the one next week to increase the suspense of whether he's alive or not.
I hope that Derek does not die. I love his charactar and what he brings to the show! He's mature, dark, and handsome. Without him the show would be a totally different show.
ok, so SPOILER ALERT!!! the girl who plays Lydia tweeted that there are TWO alphas!!! I completely agree with the Mr. Harris theory; total creepieness going on there and I have no idea what to think about that!! but I really think the vet was just covering for someone. As for Derek being dead, it says that he has 11 weeks on the show. I hope (like someone else stated) that it isn't all flash backs, he is a great angsty character to an almost too happy cast. As for what's up with Jackson, WHOA! I have no idea what that thing was coming out of his mouth! it's just another rabbit trail we have to remember as all the major stuff goes on. I really think he still just has it out for Scott, and that is why he was talking to Allison (since he overheard them in the lockerroom) but I just feel sorry for the guy, he looks horrible!! this show is fast, but then slow with giving of information- I really hope next weeks is info packed!!!!
Two alphas…this adds to my question of just how does one become an alpha…I've gone back and forth with it…if a beta wolf kills an alpha does it then become a an alpha sort of like in the animal kingdom where the leader of a pack is challenged and if the challenger wins he becomes the next leader or does it have something to do with being bitten by or clawed by an alpha when your already a beta and there is some sort of transfer bringing the beta up to a higher level (or deeper level of wolf depending upon how you look at it).
I had started to wonder if Derek might not be an alpha (or in the process of becoming one since Laura bit the dust and he's seems pretty much the end of his line…unless Jackson is turning) after the parking lot incident with Scott. I was convinced it was the alpha after Scott (maybe even another dream) and was actually surprised to see that it turned out to be Derek.

i think scott is really growing into his wolfiness. he goes back and forth. i agree with mark on this one. he's showing some badass moments, but he's not quite there yet. derek has a lot of teaching to do. i think it's being well played.
i am so loving this show and all the characters. hopefully derek is still alive. the show wouldn't be the same without him.
Okay, so who knows what is going on with Jackson?!? Personally I have come to the conclusion that he will start siding with the Alpha or being munipulated in some way by it. When Derek scratched him, that may have been enough to slowly turn him into a wolf. And when he went to the movie rental store, the Alpha seemed to have 'spared' him for some reason and it also showed where the Alpha seemed to have pulled his shirt back and looked at the scratch… He could have easily killed him then and there. The Alpha has plans!!

Derek is the best thing about this show and by far the most compelling actor — they could kill off any of the other major characters, and I'd be impressed, but if Derek is gone, I'd probably stop watching.

derek isnt dead when the alpha lifted him up his were closed and when he landed they opened up he might die on monday
I think Stiles' anger came from the fact Scott chose to save Allison instead of his father. He's known Allison a couple months at best and probably known Stiles and his father for years. On a deeper level it could also represent his saving Allison over Stiles by extension.
There's 2 alphas the on girl said. With that being notified, I believe one is the mystery alpha the teacher or boss. The other is going to be the other person that made it out of the fire. Maybe dereks dad or some other relative.
